CBC News – Thousands of International Students Still Waiting on Permits After Canadian School Year Begins
With international students already paying substantially higher tuition fees, advocates are pushing for the government to prioritize and process study permits faster. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says it is boosting staff and modernizing its systems to increase processing capacity and tackle the backlogs in the short term. Ottawa Citizen – How Soccer Is Uniting Immigrants and Newcomers in Ottawa
Nashali, who grew up in Congo, spent time in a refugee camp in Kenya and came to Canada in 2017, had always played soccer and knew the sport had a way of connecting people — something the community drastically needed. He sought a way to get immigrant youth together on the pitch. Nashali approached his bosses at SPCO and was given a grant of $2,000. With that money, he was able to co-found Active Newcomer Youth Ottawa (ANYO), buy some equipment and organize an initial meetup in the Herongate area.
Globe and Mail – Ottawa Capped Immigration Program for Afghans Who Worked with Canada Since Its Launch
When the federal government launched an immigration program for Afghans who worked with Canada’s military or government in Afghanistan, it capped the number of people it was willing to receive at a maximum of 2,500, though did not make that figure public for more than a year. The cap for the special immigration measures (SIM) program was then gradually increased over several months. The evolving caps were made public for the first time on Aug. 27 – more than a year after the program began.
The Guardian – British Muslims’ citizenship reduced to ‘second-class’ status, says thinktank
British Muslims have had their citizenship reduced to “second-class” status as a result of recently extended powers to strip people of their nationality, a thinktank has claimed. The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) says the targets of such powers are almost exclusively Muslims, mostly of south Asian heritage, embedding discrimination and creating a lesser form of citizenship.
CBC News – Here’s Why Indian Students Are Coming to B.C. — and Canada — in the Thousands
Experts say there are specific circumstances that have triggered a sharp influx of students from India recently. India and South Asia have historically been large contributors to Canadian immigration — more than five per cent of British Columbians speak Punjabi natively. However, the biggest driver of immigration recently has been post-secondary education and the promise of the Canadian dream.
