Toronto Star – Canada’s Immigration Minister Leaves Door Open to Extending Afghan Resettlement Programs
As Canada reaches the halfway point of meeting its commitment to resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says he’s not ruling out lifting the current cap and welcoming more into this country. But for the moment, he says, his main focus is the 8,500 people to whom Canada has already promised refuge who remain stuck in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
Global News – ‘I’m Free to Learn’: 17-Year-Old Afghan Refugee Excited for Future in Edmonton
Nargis and six of her family members arrived in Edmonton in January 2022. The 17-year-old fled Kabul with her three brothers, sister in law and parents when Kabul fell to the Taliban in August 2021. Catholic Social Services helped the family find accommodations, offered settlement support, counselling and orientation sessions to adjust to life in Canada. Nargis was part of a group of 170 Afghan refugees — about half of which were under 18 years old — that came to Edmonton.
CBC News – Number of Temporary Migrant Workers in Quebec Has More Than Doubled in 5 Years
The number of temporary foreign workers in Quebec has climbed more quickly than anywhere else in Canada, but experts say resources to prevent exploitation haven’t kept up, leading to more workers deserting farms for illegal work elsewhere in Quebec or across the border. The provincial government under Coalition Avenir Québec’s François Legault, who is seeking re-election on Oct. 3, has refused to increase immigration, despite a critical labour shortage set to only get worse in a booming economy with an aging population and declining birth rate.
CBC News – What François Legault Talks About When He Talks About Immigration
It can be difficult to ascertain what François Legault actually believes about immigration. After a couple of middling election results in 2012 and 2014, however, Legault began to raise immigration with increasing frequency. His proposal to cut immigration levels and impose a values test on newcomers were centrepieces of the party’s platform in 2018, for example, when it swept to power with a convincing majority. But then as now, when Legault speaks about immigration, he’s liable to utter falsehoods, contradictions, or to flirt with outright xenophobia — often before correcting himself.
CTV News – Nova Scotia Will Stop Holding Federal Immigration Detainees in Provincial Jails
This summer, Nova Scotia notified the federal government that it will end a contract with Canada Border Services Agency to hold immigration detainees in provincial correctional centres. British Columbia was the first province to make this move, terminating its contract in July. Both Nova Scotia and British Columbia’s agreements with Canada Border Services Agency require 12 months’ notice for termination, meaning both provinces will continue to hold federal immigration detainees into next summer.
