Global News – Immigration Could Be Needed Relief for Businesses Stuck in Labour Shortage: Experts

As Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine unfolded in late winter, Ottawa hotelier Colin Morrison says he began searching for ways to help. With an influx of Ukrainians expected to hit the nation’s capital in the spring and summer, Morrison says he started scouring local Facebook groups with offers of help. But as much as he was motivated to help in a crisis, Morrison says he also saw a chance to find skilled workers in the midst of a labour shortage that continues to dog Canada’s hospitality sector.

CBC News – Ottawa Working on Program to Regularize Status of 500,000 Immigrants

The federal government is aiming to create a program that will provide a path to permanent residency for up to 500,000 immigrants who are working in Canada but do not have official standing.  The program would have unprecedented scope and apply to people whose visa or work permits had expired, and to those whose refugee applications may have been denied or blocked due to a moratorium on deportations to their country, according to Radio-Canada.

The audit by Charron Human Resources, released Friday, says employees at the Montreal call centre for Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported having little time between calls, insufficient training, limited career development and a “strict” evaluation process that leaves them feeling “anxious and fearful.”

The Liberal government is lifting the limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off-campus each week in an effort to address Canada’s labour shortage. The pilot project will run from Nov. 15, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2023, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said Friday. International students in Canada who are authorized to work off-campus under the terms of their study permits previously were limited to 20 hours of paid work outside their studies for each week class was in session.

Ghousuddin Frotan, founder and director of a private school in Afghanistan, and his family are among the more than 21,000 Afghans accepted so far into Canada as refugees since Islamist militants seized control in August 2021 — including 340 resettled in Windsor and 90 in Leamington, as of this week. An educator, journalist and social development activist, Frotan discovered he was on a Taliban “hit list” and decided to flee the country with his wife and children as soon as the Taliban gained power.
