Toronto Star – After the Taliban: Leading Afghan Women Now Struggle to Survive as Refugees

More than 80 per cent of Afghan refugees are women and children, according to the United Nations. More than two million Afghans are in Pakistan, Iran and Turkey, which offer only short-term refuge and where many freedoms are curtailed for women. The Star is not identifying the women by their full names out of concern for their safety.

Global News – An Ode to Ginger Beef: The Hidden History of Chinese Canadian Cuisine

It has become a staple in Chinese restaurants and food courts across Canada. Look at any Chinese food stall in a Canadian mall and you’ll probably see ginger beef in a serving tray. But the humble dish also represents a collective struggle to survive on foreign soil. Silver Inn Restaurant, a family-owned Chinese restaurant in Calgary, purportedly invented ginger beef as a way to introduce new Chinese foods to western palates.

Globe and Mail – How to Solve Employment Challenges for Coming Population Boom

Despite declining birth rates and an aging citizenry, which threaten the long-term prospects of many major economies, Canada’s population increased at nearly twice the pace of other G7 nations between 2016 and 2021. Statistics Canada predicts the country will continue its growth in the coming decades, to between 42.9 million and 52.5 million by 2043, from 38.2 million in 2021. Given demographic trends, that growth can only be achieved through immigration, but experts say our existing process for integrating newcomers needs to be more effective.
