Toronto Star – ‘This Is Our Only Hope’: Undocumented Migrants Risk Arrest to Make Their Case in Ottawa
The federal government has been developing a regularization plan — one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s mandates for Immigration Minister Sean Fraser since December — to address the issue of undocumented workers in precarious and exploitative jobs, and tackle an underground economy. The town hall scheduled for Monday at an undisclosed venue in Ottawa is a final push to lobby parliamentarians to go for an “uncapped and inclusive” plan that can benefit as many of those who have fallen through the cracks and out of status in the complex and at times disjointed immigration system.
They decided to find a way to help and they started out by matching one donor with two refugees. From there they began fundraising to pay for more flights and so far they have helped 30 refugees come to Canada.
Toronto Star – Expect Court Challenges to Law Banning Non-Canadians from Buying Property
After January 1, 2023, it will be illegal for any non-Canadian to purchase residential property anywhere in Canada. The prohibition is contained in a law passed by Parliament in June called the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act. But the law may well be unconstitutional. Under pending regulations, it is expected that vacant land and cottages outside of major metropolitan areas will be exempt from the ban.
