A growing program provided by the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) is giving newcomers the chance to gain more skills before entering the Canadian workforce. Many newcomers struggle to get the credentials they need, so the agency is working to address this gap with its Facilitating Access to Skilled Talent program, or FAST.

Le ministère de l’Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté (MIRC) soutient n’avoir trouvé aucune faille dans le traitement des demandes de visa pour la conférence de la Société internationale du sida, en juillet.

Sans historique de crédit ni emploi, même s’ils ont des économies, de nouveaux arrivants se heurtent à des refus catégoriques lorsqu’ils tentent de louer des logements. Des familles proposent de payer des mois de loyer, parfois de 6 à 12 mois d’avance, pour avoir accès à un logement. L’Association des francophones de la région de York (AFRY) observe aussi les difficultés de sa communauté par rapport au logement. Son directeur général, Jean Grenier Godard, affirme que les demandes illégales de paiement de loyer d’avance des propriétaires sont courantes dans la région de York.

A second application, a $100 fee and more than two years later, an Ottawa woman who demanded to know why her 79-year-old mother’s visa application fell through the cracks says the family’s wait is finally over. Charlotte Clarke told CBC News this July her family was exhausted from wondering why her mother, Victoria, was left waiting so long for a visa that others were getting within weeks. Now, she’s finally arrived in Canada for her long-sought visit to see her grandchildren.
CBC News – Mexican Family Fearing Deportation Marks 1 Year of Sanctuary at Sherbrooke, Que., Church
Since last November, Georgina Flores, her husband, Manuel Rodriguez, and their 19-year old son, Manolo, haven’t stepped foot outside the Plymouth-Trinity United Church in Sherbrooke, Que. They can’t work, go to school or go out to enjoy themselves. If they do, they run the risk of being arrested, detained and eventually deported. The Rodriguez-Flores family has been living at the church since Nov. 8, 2021 — the date the mother, father and son were scheduled to report for deportation.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said changes to Canada’s immigration program next year will rebalance the world’s “most powerful economic migration system” in a way that will help hospitals, builders and other employers address chronic labour shortages, as opposed to focusing mainly on “highly skilled workers.”
