CBC News – Canada Overtakes U.K. as Destination for Hong Kong Students Amid Mounting Exodus

Thousands of Hong Kong students are choosing to come to Canada over countries like the U.K. and Australia, with more and more of its citizens applying for study permits abroad and contributing to a mounting exodus amid China’s growing control over the region. This year, Canada has approved 7,920 study permits to students coming from Hong Kong, up from about 6,300 in 2021, according to Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data. Historically, Canada issued less than 3,000 annually.

Réseau Information Municipale – Québec dépose son plan d’immigration 2023

La ministre de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration, Mme Christine Fréchette, a déposé le 8 décembre à l’Assemblée nationale le Plan d’immigration du Québec 2023. Avec ce plan, le gouvernement du Québec maintient le cap sur ses cibles d’immigration afin que les personnes immigrantes puissent continuer de contribuer à la prospérité de toutes les régions du Québec. Ce plan prévoit l’admission de 49 500 à 52 500 personnes immigrantes permanentes en 2023 et s’appuie sur des orientations adoptées dans le cadre de la Planification pluriannuelle 2020-2022.

CBC News – This Group of Montreal Newcomers Is Building Connections and Giving Back — One Stitch at a Time

Red, white and green fabrics are strewn about a small room in Montreal’s St. James United Church on Ste-Catherine Street, where four Muslim women are seated behind whirring machines, nimbly sewing Christmas gifts and decorations for donation. The donations are just one of the ways this sewing circle at the Montreal City Mission (MCM) is giving back to the community, all the while helping its members learn more about their new home city.

CBC News – Unfamiliar B.C. Weather Doesn’t Justify Denying Work Permit to Experienced Truck Driver, Judge Says

A truck driver with more than a decade of experience on the roads in the Middle East will get another shot at a Canadian work permit after a judge found it was “unreasonable” to dismiss his years of experience just because hasn’t driven in B.C. weather. The Federal Court judge also found that a visa officer distorted 35-year-old Satnam Singh’s ties to Canada in denying him a permit under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Global News – Canadians Appeal for Expansion of Closed Afghan Refugee Sponsorship Program

A temporary federal program that launched less than two months ago, waiving the need for that official refugee status, as long as the refugees meet the Canadian government’s criteria to be privately sponsored. But in those six weeks after it launched, the program reached its cap of 3,000 refugees leaving many sponsors frustrated and wondering why an arbitrary limit exists when the need is so high.

Radio-Canada – Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine veulent mieux accueillir les immigrants

La Communauté maritime des Îles-de-la-Madeleine se dote d’une structure d’accueil et d’intégration en immigration. Une soixantaine de personnes étaient présentes jeudi matin à l’annonce de la structure, qui va être financée pour trois ans par Québec. Cette initiative permettra de fournir du soutien à la fois aux nouveaux arrivants et aux entreprises, organismes et résidents de la communauté. L’objectif de cette structure est d’améliorer l’accueil et l’intégration des nouveaux arrivants à la communauté des Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
