Radio-Canada – À Vancouver, des manifestants réclament la régularisation des sans-papiers

En cette Journée internationale des migrants, une cinquantaine de manifestants se sont rassemblés à Vancouver pour demander à Ottawa de régulariser les sans-papiers. Ils demandent aussi au gouvernement fédéral de garantir la résidence permanente à tous les migrants qui sont au pays ou sur le point d’arriver. En effet, le gouvernement fédéral envisage de créer un programme massif de régularisations à l’échelle du pays. Selon Christopher Sorio, présent à la manifestation et membre du groupe Migrante British Columbia, cette promesse tarde toutefois à se concrétiser.

La Presse – Québec loin de ses objectifs

Ébranlé par un rapport de la vérificatrice générale, en 2017, le Québec a mis les bouchées doubles pour mieux franciser les immigrants : budgets additionnels, refonte des programmes, hausse de la clientèle admissible. Mais cinq ans plus tard, malgré un bilan amélioré, seulement 43,5 % des immigrants qui ne parlent pas français sont inscrits à des cours de francisation. La proportion d’immigrants non francophones participant aux services de francisation fait plutôt du surplace.

Dr. Brad Krusky is a pediatric dentist who has many patients coming to Canada as refugees. One of the biggest barriers he’s seen is language, education and families struggling to navigate government dental programs. “In my opinion, if the funds were not directed at the individual families themselves but rather injected into the system that already exists, especially provincially, I think we’d be able to do a lot better.”

Seven years after Canada opened its doors to Syrian refugees, that first cohort of newcomers say they feel good about their new lives, have remained friends with their sponsors and are hopeful for a better future. However, many still struggle with finding gainful employment, according to a two-year research project by the Environics Institute.

CBC News – They Spent More Than a Year in a Quebec Church. Now this Family Can Finally Leave Without Fear of Deportation

Manuel Rodriguez, his wife and their 19-year-old son are finally able to step outside and do something as simple as going for a short walk in Sherbrooke, Que., without running the risk of being arrested and then deported. This week, the family learned that the warrant for their arrest has been lifted. The family has also been given a temporary resident permit (TRP) and will not have to worry about deportation for 18 months.

CTV News – Toy Mountain Donates Gifts to Ukrainian Refugees in Canada for the Holidays

Tens of thousands of toys will be delivered to less fortunate families in Ottawa this Christmas thanks to Toy Mountain. Some of these gifts will hold special meaning when they arrive in the hands of Ukrainian refugees. Natalia Kuksa and her nine-year-old son Ivan have been in Canada for seven months, escaping the war in Ukraine. “It’s our first Christmas in Canada,” Kuksa said.
