Skilled immigrants are needed to increase Canada’s home supply as a wave of retirements closes in on the nation’s construction industry, the federal housing minister says. “We know there is over a million jobs in Canada that remain unfilled, so we need immigrants, skilled immigrants, to come in and help us fill those unfilled jobs and help us grow our economy,” Ahmed Hussen said.

Ottawa Citizen – From Aleppo to Pembroke: Syrian Refugee Doctor Wants to Make a Difference in Underserved Area After Ottawa Residency

The Pembroke Regional Hospital is very happy to welcome Dr. Pierre Zakko, Internal Medicine specialist, to its team of professional staff. Zakko who joined the hospital in mid-July was born and raised in Aleppo, Syria where he went to medical school and graduated in 2015. In 2016, he came to Canada as a Syrian refugee and spent two years in Montreal completing his equivalency exams and working at the Clinique Le Plein Ciel in Saint-Laurent, Que.

CBC News – Omar Burqan Came to Canada Based on Promises of Government Pilot Program, Now Says He’s in Limbo

An international student who moved his wife and son from Jordan based on a government pilot program still doesn’t know why his college no longer qualifies for that program — and why he no longer qualifies for a work permit, as promised. Omar Burqan is set to graduate next month from the educational assistant program and has no idea whether he’ll receive the work permit Atlantic Business College in Fredericton promised him was part of the program.

CBC News – Windsor Refugee Parents Get Good News After Struggle to Enter U.S. to See Premature Baby

Weeks after Mohamed Jeran’s wife gave birth to their premature son in Detroit, the couple — who are living in Windsor, Ont., as refugees — have finally been allowed by Ottawa to more easily cross the border to see him at the hospital where he’s been since his birth. He and his family have permanent residence (PR) status in Canada, and while the couple have been able to see the baby, it’s been difficult because they don’t have all their legal paperwork.

Radio-Canada – De plus en plus d’Africains viennent vivre en Alberta

Le nombre d’Africains qui s’installent en Alberta constitue une part de plus en plus importante de la population provinciale, selon le recensement de 2021 publié par Statistique Canada. L’agence précise qu’entre 2016 et 2021, 34 325 personnes en provenance d’Afrique se sont installées en Alberta. Elles étaient 15 695 à s’établir à Calgary et 14 060 à s’installer à Edmonton. Parmi ces nouveaux arrivants, 2165 étaient francophones.

La Presse – Migrants sans logis, refuges sous pression

L’afflux de demandeurs d’asile au Québec, notamment par le chemin Roxham, a des conséquences en cascade sur le réseau québécois de soutien social. L’effet le plus frappant, ce sont les migrants qui ne savent pas où se loger et qui frappent désormais à la porte des refuges pour sans-abri. Le Refuge des jeunes, par exemple, a accueilli 56 demandeurs d’asile de moins de 27 ans depuis avril, dont une vingtaine aux prises avec des problèmes psychologiques. Plus de 10 % des jeunes qui fréquentent l’organisme sont maintenant des demandeurs d’asile.
