Global News – Iranian Protester Left Blind in One Eye, Faces Barriers to Come to Canada for Help

Saman, a 30-year-old Iranian national, has been left blind in one eye for the rest of his life. Saman said on Oct. 1, 2022, an Islamic Republic security officer stood just 10 feet away from him, raised his gun and fired a rubber bullet, hitting his left eye. Saman’s story compelled Vancouver registered nurse Mahi Etminan with the BC Cancer Foundation and her brother Dr. Mahyar Etminan, who works at an Eye Care Centre, and UBC’s Deptment of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Department of Medicine, to reach out and help.

CBC News – P.E.I. Immigrant Retention Improves, but Still Canada’s Worst by Far

P.E.I.’s ability to retain immigrants has almost doubled in recent years, according to a recent report from Statistics Canada, but almost three quarters of those arriving are still gone after five years. The report focuses on the five-year retention rate. It examines what province or territory the immigrants land in, and whether they are still filing taxes in that province five years later.

CTV News – Canadian-Born Older Adults More Likely to Successfully Age Than Immigrants, Recent Study Finds

For the study, a random selection of 30,097 Canadian men and women from ages 45 to 85-years-old across seven provinces were chosen from the 2015-2018 cohort of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. The researchers examined four domains: physical wellness, psychological and emotional wellness, social wellness, and self rated wellness. The study found 71.6 per cent of the non-immigrant participants were successful agers, while 65.5 per cent of the 1446 immigrant participants were successful agers.

A two-year federal ban to stop people and corporations that aren’t Canadian from buying residential property goes into effect on Jan. 1. It’s a move that supposed to help make housing more affordable for those that live in this country. The legislation comes with a host of exceptions, including international students and refugees. But some critics say it still goes too far.

Le Devoir – Une « prison dorée » pour les immigrants

Pour améliorer les conditions de détention des personnes immigrantes, Ottawa vient d’inaugurer un nouveau « centre de surveillance » de 50 millions de dollars. Larges fenêtres laissant entrer la lumière naturelle, « espaces récréatifs » garnis de livres et de jeux de société, salle d’entraînement, trois repas par jour : le projet vise à offrir un traitement « humain » aux nouveaux arrivants. Cet édifice flambant neuf, situé sur la montée Saint-François à Laval, reste tout de même une prison.

Barret Kropf has spent his holidays under a stack of seemingly endless paperwork and appointments, but there’s nothing he’d rather be doing. The general manager for the Prairie Hockey Academy in Caronport, Sask. recently welcomed a pair of Ukrainian refugees after a friend of his from Europe informed him of a 14-year old hockey player living in a Polish refugee camp looking to resettle in Canada.
