A lifetime dream came true for a Ukrainian refugee in Ottawa as he laced up to skate with a local hockey team. Andriy Maslov, a 44, had the chance to live out his dream of playing hockey when he took to the ice with members of the Ottawa 67’s on Monday. Growing up in Odesa, Ukraine, Maslov never had the opportunity to play hockey because there were no facilities in his small town.

Maj. Lisa Compton, who’s now retired, helped the man she calls “John” — in order to keep his identity safe — and his family apply for Canadian refuge status in August 2021 when the Taliban retook hold of Afghanistan. But Compton said the application is stuck in limbo, and now she fears it’s a matter of life and death and that John could be killed by the Taliban any day because of his involvement with Canadian troops.
Globe and Mail – Ottawa Eyes ‘Aggressive Measures’ to Clear Immigration Backlog, Memo Reveals
The federal government is considering extraordinary measures to reduce its backlog of immigration applications, including waiving eligibility requirements for nearly half a million visitor visas, according to a policy memo reviewed by The Globe and Mail. There were more than 700,000 temporary resident visa (TRV) applications in the system as of early December, a portion of the overall sum.
CBC News – 2 Men Charged in India in Deaths of Family Found Frozen in Manitoba Near U.S. Border
Jagdish Patel, 39, his 37-year-old wife, Vaishali Patel, and their children were found frozen to death near the international border in southern Manitoba on Jan. 19, 2022. Deputy Commissioner Chaitanya Mandlik of the Ahmedabad crime branch in the state of Gujarat in India says two men were arrested Sunday and other suspects are also wanted in Canada and the U.S. He says the two men are accused of acting as immigration agents, supplying the family with paperwork and assisting them in getting to the U.S.
CBC News – Groups Hold Vigil for Haitian Man Found Dead Near U.S. Border
Days after a Haitian man was found dead in Quebec near an irregular border crossing, groups held a vigil in his honour and called for changes to rules regarding migrants. The body of 44-year-old Fritznel Richard was discovered earlier this month. Police say he appears to have died of hypothermia. Richard had been reported missing to the Montreal police in late December but a search for him was called off on Dec. 29 because police believed he had entered the U.S.
