CTV News – Canada’s Immigration Increase Alone Won’t Fix the Labour Market, Experts Say

“It’s clear that there are real gaps, real demands, and real needs,” said Naomi Alboim, a senior policy fellow at Toronto Metropolitan University and a former Ontario Deputy Minister of Immigration. But upping immigration levels is just one way to begin addressing those needs, she said — the government’s plan should be part of a wider initiative to address temporary workers, international students and a larger range of jobs.

Toronto Star – Why Immigration Detainee Who Died in Custody Had ‘No End Date’ on Stay in Jail

On Tuesday, a senior Canada Border Services Agency official explained to the inquest into Hassan’s death why the man was still in Canada at the time. Hassan had arrived in this country in 1992 and was granted asylum a year later. But he had been flagged for removal as far back as 2005 due to what was called his serious criminality. He exhausted all avenues of appeal, over the years, culminating with the fight to reverse a “danger opinion” against him.

Globe and Mail – Parliament Votes in Favour of Accepting Uyghur Refugees Fleeing China

Members of Parliament have voted unanimously to support a motion calling on the Canadian government to accept 10,000 Uyghurs fleeing persecution in China. Those backing the motion Wednesday included members of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, including Mr. Trudeau himself. In 2021, Mr. Trudeau’s cabinet had abstained from a previous motion in Parliament that condemned China’s repression of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims as genocide.
