Toronto Star – Why Doesn’t Canada Treat Afghan Refugees Like Ukrainians? Because They Aren’t ‘White and Christian,’ Complaint Alleges

Afghan-Canadians are formally accusing the federal government of discrimination over the difference between immigration programs for Afghans and Ukrainians trying to flee violence in their home countries. Four men who deployed with the Canadian military to Afghanistan filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal after their families were left out of the special immigration program created in 2021 to help resettle Afghans with a connection to Canada.

Toronto Star – A Canadian Senator Helped Save Afghan Women. The Immigration Department Called Police on Her

A Manitoba senator is defending herself against federal allegations she sent “inauthentic” documents in the summer of 2021 to help Afghan women get past Kabul airport checkpoints, revealing that the travel documents came from a top aide to Canada’s then-defence minister for that purpose. Sen. What’s a meaningful social interaction? Attending a doctor’s appointment? Stepping out alone into the yard for some fresh air? Singing in the shower? The question of what constitutes such interaction for inmates in segregation — broadly, solitary confinement — was at the centre of an inquest on Friday into the death of an immigration detainee while in custody of the Canada Border Services Agency in 2015.

The New Brunswick RCMP are warning people against illegally crossing the border between the province and Maine at any time, but especially during the freezing cold snap expected today. RCMP Cpl. Globe and Mail – High Housing Costs Pose a Crushing Financial Challenge for Refugees in Canada

Record-high rents are stunting the ability of some of Canada’s most vulnerable newcomers to build a life in the country that gave them safe haven. Over the past two years, Canada has welcomed around 68,000 refugees, as well as 150,000 Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion, according to federal government data. Of the refugees, more than 27,000 were Afghans who escaped following the Taliban’s return to power in the summer of 2021.
