A new Desjardins report suggests Canada’s immigration target increase could spur economic growth, with the Prairies standing to benefit the most. Principal economist Marc Desormeaux says his analysis finds Canada’s plan to increase immigration could boost gross domestic product per capita if newcomers continue to have the same success getting work that they’ve enjoyed recently.

CTV News – Keep Canada’s Doors Open to Ukrainians, Refugee Groups Urge Ottawa

Humanitarian groups that have been supporting Ukrainian refugees are calling on Ottawa to extend a special immigration program that allows people fleeing Ukraine to temporarily live, work and study in Canada. The program provides Ukrainians and their families with a visa to stay in Canada for up to three years while they figure out their next steps, but applications are due to close on March 31.

Toronto Star – Expanded Refugee Program for Afghans Now Expected Within Weeks

An expanded refugee resettlement program for Afghans will be in place within weeks, government officials confirmed Wednesday, following a settlement in a human rights complaint filed by four Afghan-Canadians who deployed with the Canadian military to Afghanistan during the war. The new policy would allow as many as 45 Afghans who worked as language and cultural advisers to bring family members to Canada.

It’s taken more than seven years for the facts about Abdurahman Ibrahim Hassan’s death to come out after he died in a struggle while in custody at a hospital on June 11, 2015. On the one hand, advocates, pushing for a homicide verdict, portrayed a young black man from war-torn Somalia, a refugee struggling with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and PTSD, failed by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Ontario’s correctional system, the hospital staff who cared for him and the police tasked with guarding him.

Globe and Mail – Immigration Minister Has ‘Serious Concerns’ About Inauthentic Canadian Travel Documents Sent to Afghans

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser told MPs Wednesday he has “serious concerns” that Afghans desperate to flee the Taliban were misled when they were sent inauthentic Canadian travel documents, leaving them with the mistaken belief that they had been cleared to come to Canada. Mr. Fraser made the comments at a hearing of the House of Commons immigration committee, which is considering launching a probe into unauthorized facilitation letters.

Les groupes humanitaires qui soutiennent les réfugiés ukrainiens demandent à Ottawa de prolonger un programme spécial d’immigration qui permet aux personnes fuyant l’Ukraine de vivre, travailler et étudier temporairement au Canada. L’Autorisation de voyage d’urgence Canada-Ukraine (AVUCU) fournit aux Ukrainiens et à leurs familles un visa pour rester au Canada jusqu’à trois ans pendant qu’ils déterminent leurs prochaines étapes, mais les demandes se terminent le 31 mars.
