It began with a tip from a single foreign worker. Now, police north of Toronto say they have rescued 64 Mexican migrants exploited by an international labour trafficking ring and in living conditions so deplorable that officers themselves have been left shaken. On Feb. 8, police acting on search warrants in East Gwillimbury, Vaughan, Toronto and Mississauga located dozens of workers who they say were lured to Canada with promises of a better future.

CBC News – ‘Stop the Bleeding,’ Philippines Health Official Says About International Recruiting of Nurses

The Philippines has traditionally trained more nurses than it needs, knowing they will work internationally and send money back home to support their families. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, government health officials say an estimated 40 per cent of all Filipino nurses have left the country or retired. “We would like to stop the bleeding as soon as we can,” Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire, officer-in-charge of the Department of Health, said in a recent interview.

CBC News – Construction Sector Joins N.S. Delegation on Refugee Recruitment Trip to Jordan

A Nova Scotia construction company is joining an official delegation to the Middle East as the province steps up its recruitment of skilled refugees to help fill some key jobs. It’s one of the strategies being used to address a labour shortage that has been affecting some essential services. The latest recruitment trip follows a visit to Kenya last fall, after which the government announced conditional job offers to 65 health-care workers.

CTV News – Canada Opens New Application Processing Centre in Philippines to Help Boost Immigration

Canada is opening a new visa application processing centre within its embassy in the Philippines in an effort to boost immigration. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser said the new centre is meant to bolster application processing as Canada tries to meet its planned immigration increases over the next few years.

La Liberté – Une subvention de 168 334$ pour des activités ethnoculturelles

Le gouvernement du Manitoba a accordé une subvention de 168 334 $ à des organismes communautaires qui agissent pour la diversité culturelle de la province. Ce financement, annoncé aujourd’hui par le ministre du Sport, de la Culture et du Patrimoine, Obby Khan, appuiera, en effet, 22 activités dans le cadre du Programme de soutien aux communautés ethnoculturelles dans la province, un programme de subvention qui soutient les organismes ethnoculturels à but non lucratif offrant des activités avec des volets sur la lutte contre le racisme, l’inclusion interconfessionnelle, le multiculturalisme et la jeunesse.

Radio-Canada – L’immigration temporaire profite des écoles anglaises

Le nombre d’élèves qui vivent au Québec en vertu d’un permis temporaire et qui fréquentent des écoles de langue anglaise a augmenté de près de 90 % en 10 ans, montrent des chiffres obtenus par La Presse. Il s’agit de jeunes souvent originaires d’Asie ou des États-Unis, mais aussi de France. Entre les années 2012 et 2015, il y avait, bon an mal an, environ 1750 élèves titulaires d’un permis de séjour temporaire inscrits à l’école en anglais. L’an dernier, c’est plus de 3200 élèves venus de l’extérieur du Québec qui étaient scolarisés en anglais.
