After fleeing India to escape domestic abuse at the hands of her former spouse, Nitasha Nijhawan worked day and night to make ends meet in Sydney, N.S., her new home. She’s working on a website to help other international students with their resumes and online profiles on platforms like LinkedIn. The site is called edipulse, which is still a work in progress — as of early March 2023 many of the links and templates on the site were not up and running.
Reuters – Why Canada Asylum Seekers Are Using Unofficial US Border Crossings
A sharp increase in asylum seekers entering Canada through unofficial crossings — including many whose bus fares were paid by New York City and aid agencies — is intensifying the pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reach an agreement with President Joe Biden to close off the entire land border to most asylum seekers. Many of the arrivals abandoned plans to seek asylum in the United States, deterred by long processing times and restrictive definitions for asylum, according to aid officials and interviews with asylum seekers.
CTV News – Halifax’s Refugee Clinic Calling for Funding to Aid Asylum Seekers
Refugee agencies, such as the Halifax Refugee Clinic are ready and wanting to help but are also being challenged. “An unprecedented level of claimants all at once. And represents about a year of our year case load in just a few weeks,” said Julie Chamagne, Executive Director of the Halifax Refugee Clinic. There are calls for more money from Ottawa to help with supports such as more legal aid to help process the asylum seekers refugee claims.
CBC News – ‘Up for the Challenge’: Agency Welcomes Roxham Road Asylum Claimants to N.S.
In a bid to ease the burden on Quebec’s public services, some refugee claimants entering the province at the irregular border crossing at Roxham Road are being diverted to Nova Scotia. According to Julie Chamagne, executive director of the Halifax Refugee Clinic, this has resulted in an unprecedented number of refugee claimants arriving in the province. She said they are staying at two hotels in Halifax.
