The four Indian nationals whose bodies were among eight pulled from the St. Lawrence River last week had been travelling in Canada on a tourist visa, a police official from their home state said Monday. Police in Canada believe eight people — four from India and four of Romanian descent — died trying to cross illegally into the United States from Canada through Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, which straddles provincial and international boundaries and includes regions of Quebec, Ontario and New York state.

Canada may have to consider updating future supports for Ukrainians seeking refuge from war, federal Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said Monday. “I’ve been hearing from provinces and from municipalities across the country who have seen large numbers of people arrive that they are struggling to keep up,” Fraser told a news conference in Calgary.

According to the report, about two-third (67) per cent of Canadians surveyed reported having a high level of confidence in the police, while the level of confidence is lower for justice system and courts (51 per cent), the federal Parliament (36 per cent) and the Canadian media (33 per cent). However, recent immigrants are most likely to report high level of confidence in the Canadian media and Parliament.

New Ukrainian immigrants were offered free dental care and wellness strategies at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Regina on Saturday with the help of over 160 students and volunteers. The event involved approximately 70 patients on Saturday. For many, it was the first time having their teeth cleaned since they moved to Canada.
Toronto Star – Police Identify Two of Eight Migrants Pulled from Water Near Akwesasne, Que.
The Akwesasne Mohawk Police identified two of the eight migrants whose bodies were pulled from the St. Lawrence River earlier this week, but said Saturday they’re still searching for a local resident whose boat was found near the victims. Akwesasne straddles the Canada-U.S. border, with parts of the territory in Ontario, Quebec and New York state.
