Al Jazeera – Family Found Dead Trying to Reach US Faced Removal from Canada

A family of four found dead trying to reach the United States by boat from Canada last week had been told they would be deported to their native Romania, Canadian media outlets have reported. Florin and Cristina lordache and their two young children – aged two and one – were among eight people found dead in the St Lawrence River near the US-Canada border on Thursday and Friday.

Globe and Mail – Niagara Region Warns Lack of Provincial Funding for Asylum Seekers Stretching Resources

Ontario’s Niagara region is warning it is $5.1-million short in money from the provincial government to adequately respond to an influx of asylum seekers. Without it, officials say the region could be forced to reduce the amount and frequency of discretionary benefits provided to people in need through the Ontario Works program, including rent support to transition families out of hotels and into permanent housing.

Toronto Star – Romanian Migrants Who Died in Akwesasne Had Tried to Claim Asylum in Canada Twice

A Romanian man who perished in the St. Lawrence River with his young family last week twice came to Canada for asylum and was arrested by American authorities when trying to sneak into the U.S. to join his siblings there. For five years, Florin Iordache was desperate to start a new life. He risked his personal safety all while starting a family with his partner as they struggled to find a new country to call home.

CBC News – Desperation Behind Illegal Border Crossings, Akwesasne Chief Says

The grand chief of Akwesasne’s elected council says desperation is driving some people to risk their lives crossing the Canada-U.S. border illegally, and economic pressure is driving some community members to help them. The bodies of eight people — four from India and four of Romanian descent — were pulled from the St. Lawrence River near the Kanien’kehá:ka or Mohawk community about 130 kilometres west of Montreal on the Quebec, Ontario and New York borders.

La Presse – Le Canada pourrait devoir ajuster l’aide futures aux réfugiés ukrainiens, selon Fraser

Le Canada devra peut-être envisager de mettre à jour les futurs soutiens aux Ukrainiens cherchant refuge après la guerre, a déclaré lundi le ministre fédéral de l’Immigration, Sean Fraser. Ottawa a annoncé en mars une prolongation de trois mois, jusqu’au 15 juillet, pour que les Ukrainiens évacués puissent demander un visa d’urgence de trois ans. Ils auront alors jusqu’à la fin mars 2024 pour se rendre au Canada, où le gouvernement fédéral leur offrirait un paiement unique de soutien du revenu et deux semaines d’hébergement à l’hôtel.
