Toronto Star – How a Botched Letter from Canada Condemned One Family to Torment in Afghanistan

Afzaly worked as a translator and fixer in Afghanistan for major Canadian media, including the Toronto Star and CBC. His parents and more than a dozen family members have been hiding for nearly two years, fearing the Taliban, who toppled the western-backed Afghan government in August 2021. His family is stranded in Kabul, they say, because of a mistaken facilitation letter, the kind meant to allow people to enter Canada, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Al Jazeera – An Assault on Asylum? Experts Raise Alarm

Last May, for the first time in recorded history, more than 100 million people around the globe had been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence and persecution. Today, experts have cautioned that an equally alarming trend is also picking up pace: the “erosion” of the right to seek asylum in other countries. In North America, Canada last month extended a deal with the US that effectively allows it to shut the door on most asylum seekers who cross the US-Canada land border and send them back to the United States, even if they have reached Canadian territory.

Globe and Mail – Request to Remove Newspaper Article Among Ottawa’s Queries to Social-Media Giants

Newly released documents show that a federal government department asked Facebook and Twitter to delete a newspaper article that it felt contained errors – but both social-media giants denied the request. Documents say that staff at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, which reports to Parliament through the immigration minister but is otherwise an independent body, believed the article contained “serious errors of fact risking [and] undermining public confidence in the independence of the board as well as the integrity of the refugee determination system.”

Normand Provencher

CBC News – To Meet Demand from Newcomers, Alberta Food Banks Are Bringing New Diversity to Grocery Hampers

Jean Claude Munyezamu remembers answering a phone call from a six-year-old boy asking if his non-profit group could provide milk for his newborn sibling. The boy, who attended Umoja Community Mosaic’s drop-in soccer program, was translating for his Ethiopian-speaking mother. About one in four food bank clients in Alberta self-identified as an immigrant, refugee or visible minority group in a HungerCount report in 2022. Umoja started giving out culturally appropriate food bags after realizing the gap in the system.

CBC – ‘Hate-motivated attack’ at Markham mosque provokes condemnation

Condemnation poured in Sunday in response to what the Islamic Society of Markham (ISM) said was “a hate-motivated attack” at its mosque earlier this week. In a statement Saturday night ISM said that on the morning of April 6, an individual came to the mosque on Denison Street and upon entering, apparently tore a copy of the Qur’an while directing racist and Islamophobic rants toward worshippers.
