Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said in the news release that he is proud to mark a “significant milestone” by welcoming more than 30,000 vulnerable Afghans to their new home. But many Afghans remain stranded inside Afghanistan, or in neighbouring Pakistan, and have waited more than a year for a flight to Canada without having received any explanation for the delay. The Globe and Mail went to Pakistan in November and spoke with dozens of Afghans who are waiting to come to Canada.

After the Taliban swept to power in August 2021, Canada promised to resettle at least 40,000 Afghans through a number of special programs. More than 300 people from Afghanistan arrived in Canada on Wednesday, bringing the total number of Afghans resettled since the Taliban takeover of that country to more than 30,000, the federal government said.

The case behind the revelation is for a husband and wife, both professionals, who came to Canada from Iran in 2020 and claimed refugee protection. When the couple appeared before the IRB for a refugee hearing, the adjudicator was told by the government that 23 nearly identical claims for 41 refugee claimants mirrored the couple’s claim and all were insufficient. Their claim was denied because it lacked credibility. Represented by a new lawyer, Rachel Bourbeau, the couple appealed to the Federal Court to review the decision against claims of counsel’s incompetence.
