Police in India say they are looking for three men in connection with the deaths of a family from Gujarat who perished trying to cross into the United States by boat through Akwesasne, Que., in March. Achal Tyagi, superintendent of police for the city of Mehsana, in the western state of Gujarat, says authorities have issued a “lookout circular” for three men: Nikulsinh Vihol, Sachin Vihol and Arjunsinh Chavda.

CBC News – So Close to Canada, but Stranded in Maine. After Roxham Change, Migrants Are Piling Up in This Small U.S. City

In Portland, Maine, Louisma Dosou, his wife and their two children huddled outside a shelter for families last week. “They don’t have space for us,” Dosou, 40, said Wednesday morning. The family had been in the small coastal city about a week and still had no place to lay their heads. Every place they tried was full. The family were among a group of asylum seekers who had stopped at the Chestnut Street Family Services shelter that morning before trying to find somewhere else to sleep later that night.

London Free Press – ‘Real Success All Around’: Western University Program Boosts Ukraine Refugees

Facing a pandemic-fuelled dorm worker shortage, Western University put together a pilot project that helps transplanted Ukrainians learn English on the job. That work-learn program has gone so well, some have moved from back-of-house positions such as washing dishes to serving as barista in their residence’s coffee house. All 11 Ukrainian refugees hired last fall plan to return in September.

Global News – Refugee Family in ‘Limbo’ as Sudan War Prevents Arrival in Halifax

A mother of three children currently in a refugee camp who was supposed to be moving to Halifax is now stranded due to the ongoing war in Sudan. On May 3, the Open Harbour Refugee Association posted on Facebook that it had received information that the airport in Khartoum, Sudan, was officially closed. The family, originally from Eritrea, has been living in a refugee camp in Kassala, Sudan, and their original arrival date in Halifax would have been May 25.

Radio-Canada – La prolongation du Programme d’immigration rurale et de Nord de nouveau réclamée

La Corporation de développement économique de Timmins réclame la prolongation du Programme d’immigration dans les communautés rurales et du Nord, un projet-pilote qui arrive à échéance en août 2024. Selon Bailey Campbell, coordonnatrice de programme pour l’organisme, 338 personnes ont reçu une recommandation pour l’obtention de la résidence permanente grâce au programme depuis le lancement du projet-pilote il y a trois ans. Elle rassemble en ce moment des lettres de soutien qui seront envoyées au ministère de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté.

Le Devoir – La ministre de l’Immigration promet de réduire les délais de parrainage des réfugiés

La ministre de l’Immigration, Christine Fréchette, promet de travailler à réduire les délais de traitement pour le parrainage des réfugiés. « Dans mes trois priorités, il y a celle de l’amélioration des délais et de l’amélioration des processus. On travaille en étroite collaboration avec le fédéral en ce sens-là. On va poursuivre dans la même veine », a-t-elle dit. Elle n’a toutefois pas voulu se prononcer sur des objectifs concrets de réduction des délais. « On travaille à fixer des améliorations », a-t-elle ajouté.
