A refugee advocacy group chaired by former Liberal foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy is proposing a trust fund be created to redistribute seized Russian assets to Ukrainians as allies of Kyiv make plans for rebuilding the war-damaged country. The federal government under Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland pioneered an effort last year to seize and sell Russian assets to fund the reconstruction of Ukraine and has already announced plans to seize a massive Volga-Dnepr cargo plane parked in Toronto as well as US$26-million belonging to a company owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Fifty-nine refugees have been preparing for Moncton’s first refugee job fair for weeks. City of Moncton Immigration Strategy Officer Angélique Reddy-Kalala said settlement agencies like the Multicultural Association of the Greater Moncton Area (MAGMA) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) helped refugees create a résumé for the event. She said the newcomers were matched with employers based on their prior experience, and 110 interviews were arranged for the job fair.

Most of the workers injured in a bus crash on a forest service road north of Prince George, B.C., on Friday were immigrant housekeepers who had recently been rehoused off site and made to commute two hours each way to Coastal GasLink’s Parsnip Lodge work camp, according to their union. The bus was carrying 25 people when it flipped over on the remote Firth Lake forest service road.

Dozens of people headed to Winnipeg’s Central Park on Monday, joining a rally in support of repealing a years-old agreement between Canada and the United States. “(The agreement) takes back Canada’s commitment to refugees and makes Canada (go back) on its obligations to protect the rights of refugees,” said Abdikheir Ahmed, a member of the Immigration Matters in Canada Coalition. Ahmed said the agreement can put the lives of refugees in danger.
