Un document interne du ministère de l’Immigration qui revient sur la gestion parfois problématique de la 24e Conférence internationale sur le sida de l’année dernière suggère de créer une nouvelle équipe vouée aux événements spéciaux. Des documents obtenus par La Presse canadienne illustrent la difficulté qu’a eu Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada à collaborer avec l’International AIDS Society (Société internationale sur le sida) en vue de la 24e Conférence internationale sur le sida de l’année dernière. Les deux organisations souhaitaient éviter un refus massif de visas.

Globe and Mail – Border Agency Investigating Links Between Student Visa Fraud and Crime, Gangs
The Canada Border Services Agency, which is investigating abuses of the student visa system, has uncovered evidence that some people who came to Canada on student visas were not attending university or college but were involved in criminality and gangs. The CBSA would not disclose details of continuing investigations, but it told The Globe and Mail that a probe into 300 students who gained study permits with fake acceptance letters from universities and colleges has so far identified 10 people involved in criminal activity in Canada.

The refugee housing crisis in Toronto is drawing attention to another challenge facing asylum seekers in Canada: how long it takes for them to get permission to work in this country. Asylum seekers are allowed to get a job in Canada while their claim for refugee status is being assessed, but only if they’ve been issued a work permit. Staff at agencies providing services to refugee claimants say their clients are typically waiting anywhere from several months to more than a year for work permits.
