Toronto Star — Canada Border Services Agency says no more immigration detainees are in provincial jails

With the last province ending its contract with Ottawa this week, there are no more federal immigration detainees held in provincial jails, fulfilling recommendations by an inquest jury into the death of a migrant in custody. Immigration detention will now be a full federal responsibility. High-risk detainees awaiting removal proceedings will be placed in an area of Correctional Service Canada’s Regional Reception Centre in Sainte-Annedes-Plaines, Que. Immigration detention will now be a full federal responsibility as the controversial practice has ended in all 10 provinces.

Reuters — Canada turns back more asylum-seekers to US despite third-country deportation risk

Canada’s government is sending more asylum-seekers hoping to file claims in Canada back to the U.S. under a bilateral pact, even as the U.S. says it may deport them to third countries.
Some of the people Canada is turning back should be eligible to file refugee claims in Canada, lawyers say, under exemptions to the Safe Third Country Agreement. The agreement broadly requires asylum-seekers at the Canada-U.S. border to be sent back to the first of the two countries they entered but allows some people – for example those with close family in Canada or stateless persons – to file claims.

CTV News — Canada blocked visa applications without explanation for Gazans fleeing war: lawyer

When immigration lawyer Hana Marku opened her email weeks ago to a photo of an emaciated infant in the Gaza Strip, she said she felt helpless. The child is among about 50 Palestinians the Toronto-based lawyer is representing. She said each one was blocked without explanation from submitting applications under the temporary visa program the Canadian government created to help them flee the Israel-Hamas war.

CBC News — Alberta premier directs minister to increase provincial control over immigration

Premier Danielle Smith is directing the provincial jobs minister to use all legal means possible to give Alberta more control over immigration. In a new mandate letter given to Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Minister Joseph Schow, Smith says Alberta needs more control over immigration to ensure the province sees sustainable levels of newcomers. In an emailed statement, Schow said the federal government has neglected to give consideration to the feedback the Alberta government has provided about immigration.
