Tous les ministres du gouvernement Trudeau sont d’avis que les seuils d’immigration du Canada doivent être maintenus pour ne pas priver de travailleurs le secteur de la construction, affirme la vice-première ministre Chrystia Freeland en marge d’une retraite du cabinet sur le thème du logement. « On est tous d’accord avec ce que le ministre [de l’Immigration Marc] Miller a dit. On comprend l’importance de l’immigration pour notre pays », a laissé tomber Mme Freeland mardi.

Le gouvernement fédéral envisage sérieusement de plafonner le nombre de visas octroyés à des étudiants étrangers afin de notamment pallier à la crise du logement. « Il y a plusieurs éléments qu’on regarde, notamment un plafond. (…) C’est quelque chose qu’on va voir en profondeur », a déclaré mardi le nouveau ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté, Marc Miller, lors d’une mêlée de presse improvisée en marge de la retraite du cabinet fédéral à Charlottetown, la capitale de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard.

The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal says it still believes the Quebec government needs to increase the province’s immigration threshold to 60,000 — a stance it has held since 2016. In a statement issued on Tuesday, board president Michel Leblanc said the province has what it takes to welcome 60,000 people and doing so could go a long way in helping the labour challenges Quebec is facing.
CTV News – Canada Must Explore Links Between Immigration, Housing Crunch: Marc Miller
The Liberal government set new immigration targets last fall that would see Canada welcome 500,000 newcomers in 2025. That compares with 341,000 immigrants arriving in 2019, and a record high of 431,645 in 2022. Multiple ministers, including Immigration Minister Marc Miller, stressed that immigrants are not to blame for Canada’s housing challenges, but he said the volume of immigration, including international students, does impact the availability of housing.
CTV News – Ottawa Mission Facing Influx of Refugees and Asylum Claimants
The Ottawa Mission is dealing with a major influx of refugees and asylum claimants who have nowhere else to go. CEO Peter Tilley told Newstalk 580 CFRA’s “Ottawa Now with Kristy Cameron” that what he first thought was a “blip” has become a pattern. Tilley said of the 228 new people who booked into the Ottawa Mission between June 1 and Aug. 14, 87 identified as asylum seekers or refugees.
CBC News – Provincial Regulator Orders Granville College to Refund $10K After Misleading an International Student
Soon after arriving in Canada and starting the program, Shivani Sharma realized her program at Granville College wasn’t what she signed up for, and decided to withdraw and ask for a refund. The college refused, leaving her education and immigration status up in the air. After six months of uncertainty and no money to enrol in a new program, B.C.’s Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB), which regulates private colleges, has found Granville College “misled” Sharma and ordered it to refund more than $10,000 to the international student.
