La Presse – Le Québec franchit le cap des 500 000 immigrants temporaires

Les immigrants temporaires dépassent le cap du demi-million au Québec. Les dernières données de Statistique Canada, publiées mardi, montrent que la croissance spectaculaire observée au troisième trimestre s’est poursuivie au quatrième trimestre de 2023. Il y a un an, Statistique Canada dénombrait 360 936 immigrants temporaires, qu’on appelle aussi des résidents non permanents. Ce nombre atteint maintenant 528 034, soit une hausse de 46 % en un an. Qui sont ces nouveaux venus ? Que font-ils ? Il s’agit d’étrangers qui détiennent un permis de travail, un permis d’études ou qui ont demandé l’asile.

Radio-Canada – Ottawa ouvre la porte au retour du visa pour les Mexicains

Ottawa pourrait revoir prochainement sa décision d’exempter les Mexicains de l’obligation d’avoir un visa pour entrer sur le territoire canadien.  « On regarde nos options », admet le ministre de l’Immigration, Marc Miller. Pour la première fois, le gouvernement Trudeau ouvre la porte à revoir l’une de ses principales mesures de politique internationale promise, puis mise en place à son arrivée au pouvoir. Entre janvier et septembre, près de 17 500 Mexicains sont arrivés au Canada pour demander l’asile. C’est d’ores et déjà plus du double de l’an passé.

CBC – Canadian trapped in Gaza pleads for help as Ottawa announces new immigration measures

A Canadian citizen trapped in Gaza is begging for help as Ottawa announces new measures to help family members of Canadians flee the war zone.

Mahmoud Kouta of London, Ont. told CBC News he’s been trapped in Gaza since the current Israel-Hamas war broke out.

The air and ground war was launched in response to Hamas’s brutal Oct. 7 attack on Israeli civilians. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, the war has killed nearly 20,000 Palestinians and displaced roughly 1.9 million people, and has demolished much of northern Gaza.

CTV – Gov’t to offer 3-year visas to Canadians’ extended family in Gaza, starting in 2024

Canada is rolling out new immigration measures including granting temporary visas to individuals in Gaza who are related to Canadians, as well as Israelis and Palestinians already in this country.

Noting that many Canadians are concerned about the safety of their loved ones currently in Gaza, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller announced Thursday that the government is going to be granting three-year temporary resident visas for extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

CBC – Holiday dinner in Niagara brings newcomers together during what can be a ‘tough,’ lonely time

Nothing brings Olayinka Animashaun more joy than seeing other people happy.

For the second year in a row, the Niagara Falls, Ont., resident is hosting a holiday dinner for African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees in the community.

Animashaun, who came to Canada in 2015 from Nigeria, said she understands first hand how lonely it can be for some newcomers to Canada, especially during their first months in the country.

CityNews – Quebec passes the 500,000 mark for temporary immigrants

The number of temporary immigrants has now passed the half-million mark in Quebec — reaching an all-time high, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

The number jumped by 46 per cent in one year, for all categories, from 361,000 to 528,000.

In Canada, the number of temporary immigrants – or non-permanent residents – reached 2.5 million. A year ago, there were 1.7 million out of an estimated population of 40.5 million.
