Globe and Mail – colleges accuse Ottawa of creating ‘chaos’ for international students with new cap

The head of a group that represents Ontario’s publicly funded colleges says the federal government has created chaos for prospective international students by imposing what amounts to a moratorium on their applications for study permits.

Marketa Evans, the president of Colleges Ontario, an association of the province’s 24 public colleges, said the federal government’s new cap on the number of study permits, announced earlier this week, has already resulted in permit applications being returned to students abroad without explanation. This, she said, had left them unsure whether they will be able to study in Canada.

Saskatoon StarPhoenix – Immigration-focused exhibit returns to Saskatchewan for final show

Human Capital, a travelling multi-artist exhibit focused on Canada’s immigration policies and history, opened at Regina’s MacKenzie Art Gallery at the end of 2020.

“‘Human Capital’ is actually from the official language of our current immigration policies,” said curator Tak Pham. “They look at ‘human capital’ to describe incoming immigrants — the ideal immigrants, who are expected to bring their knowledge and their labour to the country to help boost the Canadian economy.”

Canadians are stepping up for international students after the federal government announced new measures limiting the intake over the next two years along with restrictions on work permits for incoming students and their spouses.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller announced Monday the Trudeau government will slash the number of undergraduate study permits to be issued in 2024 by 35% in comparison to 2023, resulting in approximately 360,000 visa approvals only.
