National Post – Time is running out for Iranians allowed to stay in Canada as protection from regime

Lawyers representing Iranian temporary residents in Canada, who have been allowed to stay here for fear of returning to Iran, say they have gotten noting but silence from the federal government over extending the arrangement, which is set to expire this month.

In February 2023, the Canadian government announced it would allow Iranians already here on visitor or students visas, who feared returning to Iran, to extend their stay until February 2024. It also waived costs for Canadians in Iran to get travel documents to return home.

Committee members from all parties agree Ottawa’s limit on study permits doesn’t reflect New Brunswick reality

A Green Party MLA says New Brunswick should have more control over immigration numbers in response to the federal government’s new cap on international study permits.

Megan Mitton says Ottawa’s one-size-fits-all decision is going to have a negative impact, for sure on the province’s post-secondary institutions.

Within 17 days of arriving in Canada, Ali was introduced to methamphetamine.

“I was lonely and was thinking of suicide,” said the international student from Turkey.

Ali said he has been using crystal meth on and off since he moved to Saskatoon in 2022. Now, the 23-year-old is working toward recovery but said mental health services in his language and culturally specific health care are lacking.

Radio-Canada – Une députée demande que le N.-B. contrôle davantage son immigration

Une députée de l’Assemblée législative du Nouveau-Brunswick croit que la province devrait avoir contrôler davantage le nombre d’immigrants admis sur son territoire. Megan Mitton, députée du Parti vert dans Memramcook-Tantramar, réagissait à la décision récente du gouvernement Trudeau de limiter pour au moins deux ans le nombre d’étudiants étrangers qui entrent au Canada. L’élue estime que la décision d’Ottawa est imposée à toutes les régions du pays, sans égard aux particularités de chaque province.

Radio-Canada – Demandeurs d’asile et identité québécoise : « Une question de nombre », dit Roberge

En entrevue samedi à l’émission de radio Les faits d’abord, Jean-François Roberge a défendu l’intention de la CAQ de se tourner vers la Cour suprême pour contester le jugement rendu il y a deux semaines par la Cour d’appel, qui ordonne au gouvernement de permettre aux demandeurs d’asile d’avoir accès aux CPE et aux garderies subventionnées. Le ministre de la Langue française, qui estime que l’identité québécoise pourrait être en danger s’il y avait un trop grand nombre de demandeurs d’asile, a néanmoins tenu à préciser qu’il ne s’agit pas de jeter le blâme sur des personnes qui, légitimement, veulent améliorer leur sort.
