Toronto Star – Trudeau government won’t rule out visa requirements for more countries besides Mexico
The reimposition Thursday of a visa requirement for some Mexican visitors may not be the last move Ottawa makes to save Canada’s immigration system from buckling under the weight of historic numbers of asylum-seekers.
CBC – Immigration minister says meeting with Israel’s ambassador on Gaza was ‘frustrating’
Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Thursday his conversation with Israeli Ambassador Iddo Moed earlier this month about Canada’s attempts to get Palestinians with family ties to Canada out of Gaza was “frustrating … on many levels.”
“People are dying in Gaza so we can’t expect these meetings to be full of pleasantries,” Miller told journalists during a news conference.
He said he and Moed agreed to disagree on a number of points. He did not elaborate.
The Conversation – How open source tech can make Canada’s immigration system fairer
Federal immigration minister Marc Miller recently announced the government is implementing a two-year cap on the number of international students admitted into Canada.
This comes amid the government’s broader changes to the immigration system to streamline the types of people who can settle in Canada. Last year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada introduced category-based draws for permanent residence applicants. The new requirements are designed to prioritize applications from health-care and STEM professionals, and other in-demand workers.
Canada.ca – Extension of special measures for Iranian nationals in Canada as temporary residents
Due to Iran’s crackdown on protestors following the killing of Mahsa Amini, the Government of Canada introduced special measures to support Iranian temporary residents in Canada as well as Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in Iran.
These special measures are now being extended until February 28, 2025.
Under these special measures, Iranian nationals in Canada with valid temporary resident status can continue to study, work or visit family by applying for an extension of their status free of charge. They can also apply to move between temporary streams, from within Canada, at no cost.
Additionally, Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents in Iran who wish to leave can continue to apply for passports and permanent resident travel documents for free.
CTV News – Ottawa will shut down shady post-secondary institutions if provinces don’t: Miller
Ottawa is ready to step in and shut down shady schools that are abusing the international student program if provinces don’t crack down, Immigration Minister Marc Miller warned Tuesday.
Miller said there are problems across the college sector, but some of the worst offenders are private institutions — and those schools need to go.
“There’s responsibility to go around,” Miller said on Parliament Hill ahead of the weekly cabinet meeting. “I just think that some of the really, really bad actors are in the private sphere and those need to be shut down.”
