Five Canadian children are languishing in a squalid detention camp in northeastern Syria after Ottawa denied their mothers permission to come to Canada, says a lawyer fighting in court on behalf of the families.

The development is the latest setback for Canadians among the many foreign nationals in ramshackle centres set up after the war-ravaged region was wrested from militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

L’organisme sans but lucratif d’Edmonton, Hope Mission, souhaite proposer à l’automne un établissement d’accueil pour les nouveaux arrivants. Ce centre, qui aura une capacité de 100 lits, sera ouvert tous les jours, 24 heures sur 24. L’organisme dit avoir enregistré une augmentation de 700 % de personnes s’identifiant comme demandeurs d’asile, nouveaux arrivants ou immigrants entre 2022 et 2023, passant de 25 personnes en 2022 à 199 en 2023. Cette réalité a conduit le personnel de ces refuges à devoir adapter leurs services.

Les nouvelles cibles d’immigration francophone ne sont « pas suffisant[es] », prévient le Comité permanent des langues officielles, qui recommande à Ottawa de rehausser ses objectifs sans empiéter sur ceux du Québec. Afin de « rééquilibrer le poids démographique des francophones au Canada », le ministre fédéral de l’Immigration, Marc Miller, doit « reconnaî[tre] que le taux actuel d’immigration francophone, fixé respectivement pour les années 2024, 2025 et 2026 à 6 %, 7 % et 8 %, n’est pas suffisant », peut-on lire dans un rapport déposé en Chambre jeudi.

Housing and immigration advocates are angry New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs is blaming the housing crisis on immigrants and say his comments are dangerous. “OK, what is the root cause of our housing crisis? Aditya Rao is a board member of the Madhu Verma Migrant Justice Centre, which provides services to migrant workers in New Brunswick facing poor working and housing conditions. “This is a really dangerous road to go down,” Rao said of Higgs’s analysis. Racists and xenophobes would be waiting for words like this, he said.
