Immigration To U.K. Rises 21% Despite Coalition Clampdown

The [British] government’s cap on migration to Britain from outside Europe is being more than offset by a renewed rise in migration from Poland and other EU countries, immigration experts have warned. British employers are increasingly turning to EU migrants to fill the gaps left by the government’s clampdown on the recruitment of overseas skilled labour from outside Europe, according to Oxford University’s migration observatory. The latest annual statistics show that net inward migration – which Conservative ministers have pledged to reduce to below 100,000 by the general election – actually rose by 21% during 2010, to 239,000.

Failed Refugees Can Get $2G To Leave

A controversial policy that will enable Ottawa to buy airline tickets for failed refugees and give them up to $2,000 each to leave Canada is slated to take effect in June next year. Failed claimants under a Balanced Refugee Reform Act can use the $2,000 when they return home for education, vocational training, job placements or business pursuits, federal immigration officials said. The Act, which will have refugee cases decided in a year, contains an Assisted Voluntary Returns (AVR) program to give financial incentive to failed claimants to leave Canada and reintegrate them in their home country. The initiative has been met with applause by lawyers and immigration workers. “The Canadian taxpayers will save a lot of money by getting these people to leave right away,” said lawyer Richard Kurland. “If they don’t leave, we have to pay to carry them.”

More Indian Students Heading To Canadian Universities

The University of Alberta recently announced that they are welcoming more Indian students than ever. Indian students seeking high-quality education at inexpensive costs are looking abroad, especially to Canada. This year, Canadian universities are expecting to welcome more than 12,000 post-secondary students from India. This number is nearly four times the number of Indian students that attended Canadian schools in 2008. Last year, nearly 700 Indian students attended the University of Alberta, a 311 percent increase since 2008. The University of Alberta’s President, Indira Samarasekera, told CTV Canada AM that, “Indian students are looking for opportunities given that there are a large number of Indian students in the age range of 18 to 25. They are looking for places with both reputation and quality, but value for money. Canada is an extremely sweet spot when you combine all of those.”

Man Posed As Official And Demanded Immigration Fees, Police Say

Police believe more than eight new immigrants to Toronto gave thousands of dollars to a man, who allegedly pretended to be an immigration officer. The man, who said he worked for Canada Border Services Agency, charged between $1,800 and $3,900 from each victim and said he would help them with their immigration process, according to police. At times he allegedly threatened to deport the victims, who received no services from the man despite his fees, police said.

The Irish Unemployed Seek Greener Shores In Toronto

When west-end contractor Mark Gillespie needed a few hammers for hire, he acted on a tip about Toronto’s hostels being packed with unemployed tradespeople and put up a “help wanted” ad at the Canadiana Backpackers Inn near Spadina and Queen. “I got a dozen calls the first day,” Mr. Gillespie said. “I had to ask the last guy to take down the ad.” All the respondents had two things in common: they were looking for work, and they had Irish accents.
