Globe and Mail – PEI’s Immigration Program Had Long Concerned Ottawa: Kenney

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Ottawa had “very serious concerns” about PEI’s immigration program long before it decided this week to refer new allegations of corruption to the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency. The federal minister noted that Ottawa suspended the program in 2008. “Obviously it concerns us,” Mr. Kenney said in an interview with CTV, when asked about allegations brought forward to his department this week by three former PEI public servants alleging wrongdoing inside a provincial immigration program.

The New York Times – Deportation Program Sows Distrust, US Told

A task force advising an Obama administration deportation program has sharply criticized immigration officials for creating confusion about its purposes and has found that the program had an “unintended negative impact” on public safety in local communities. In a report on the program, known as Secure Communities, the task force said that the program had eroded public trust by leading to the detention of many immigrants who had not committed serious crimes, after officials said its aim was to remove “the worst of the worst” immigrant criminals from the United States. The task force report was completed Wednesday.

Globe and Mail – Ottawa Calls For Probe Of PEI Immigration Program

The federal government is calling in the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency to investigate allegations of fraud and bribery in a PEI immigration program that allowed hundreds of primarily Chinese nationals to buy their way into Canada. In less than three weeks, Islanders will vote on whether to re-elect Robert Ghiz’s Liberal government. His party is leading in the polls, but has been on the defensive since 2008 because relatives of the Premier, along with cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and several MLAs, benefited financially from the immigrant investor program.

Globe and Mail – Cities Press Ottawa To Do More For Immigrants

Canadian municipalities say the federal government’s narrow focus on helping new immigrants with language training and employment assistance ignores the basic needs of people coming to Canada from abroad – including affordable housing and public transportation. In a report released Tuesday, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) also says Canada’s cities are routinely ignored as Ottawa forms strategies to help newcomers adapt to life in this country.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada – Mister Kenney Calls For Smooth Transition To The Immigration Consultants Of Canada Regulatory Council

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney today called on the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC) to do its utmost to ensure a smooth transition to the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC), the new regulator of immigration consultants. “The ICCRC is the designated regulator of immigration consultants under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and it is crucial that all parties involved make sure that there is no confusion about who now regulates immigration consultants,” said Minister Kenney.
