Citizenship and Immigration Canada – Minister Kenney Announces Increased Settlement Funding For 11 Provinces And Territories
Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, today announced allocations for federal funding of settlement services in all provinces and territories outside Quebec for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. “The Government of Canada wants newcomers to integrate into Canada. That is why we have tripled settlement funding since 2005-06,” said Minister Kenney. “We are committed to ensuring the distribution of settlement funding is fair and that immigrants receive the same level of service, regardless of where they choose to settle.”
Citizenship and Immigration Canada – CIC Goes Paperless
Citizenship and Immigration Canada will make the application process easier while saving $4.2 million over the next three years, by moving more of its business online, Minister Jason Kenney announced today. This change will simplify the application process and make it more accessible to applicants. On line services allow people to apply whenever and wherever they want, with online tools to help navigate the immigration process and fill out forms. As part of the move to online services, beginning December 1, 2011, CIC will no longer print and mail out forms and application kits.
CBC – Mexican Farm Workers File Suit Against Canada
Three Mexican migrant farm workers have filed a lawsuit against the Canadian government and their Ontario-based former employer for terminating their contract and sending them home without reason or explanation. Michael Fenrick, a Toronto lawyer who is part of the team handling the case, says this is the first suit of its kind by migrant workers invoking their charter rights. The three men are seeking $25,000 each in damages for breach of contract, Fenrick said.
Oakville Ontario News: Town Of Oakville Welcomes New Canadians
The Town of Oakville, in partnership with Citizenship and Immigration Canada, welcomed 50 new Canadian citizens at a citizenship ceremony at Town Hall on November 17, 2011. Oakville’s newest Canadians come from 21 different countries, including Bangladesh, China, Colombia, England, India, Iraq, Kenya, South Korea, Macedonia, Russia, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Venezuela. “As an immigrant myself, I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this day— to witness the joy and enthusiasm of people from around the world who will now proudly call themselves Canadian,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “On behalf of the town and residents of Oakville, I encourage our newest citizens to get involved in our community and experience all the great things Oakville has to offer.”
Citizenship and Immigration Canada – A Brighter Future: New Refugee Video Unveiled
A new YouTube video highlighting how Canada’s refugee resettlement program can change a family’s life was launched today by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. “Canada resettles refugees to save lives and to provide stability to those fleeing persecution who have no hope of relief elsewhere,” said Minister Kenney. “Running for your life as members of your family are killed around you, thankfully, is not an experience familiar to most Canadians. Unfortunately, it is something all too familiar for refugees around the world.”
London Free Press – Visa Fraudsters Pose Threat: Expert
A widespread market overseas for fake visa documents — including counterfeit clean police records — means false applicants are slipping past Canadian visa officials. And Christian Leuprecht, an expert on border and defence policy with the Royal Military College, cautions it poses a security challenge for Canada. Some of the main source countries of immigrants to Canada have developed what Leuprecht has dubbed a “corrupt immigrate-to-Canada industry” that provides potential visa applicants with things like clean record checks and bank statements to help ease the process.
