Globe and Mail – Arizona Sheriff Mocks Racial Profiling Investigation in Fundraising Speech

An audio recording has surfaced of an Arizona sheriff playing his refusal to co-operate in a federal racial profiling investigation for laughs at a fundraiser for an anti-illegal-immigration group in Texas. He ridicules politicians who sought the probe and displays contempt toward federal authorities who were – and are still – investigating him on two fronts.

The Tyee – Why Bill C-31’s “Safe Countries” are a Dangerous Idea

The supposed impetus of the law is to “protect” Canada’s interests against “bogus” refugee claimants. However, this proposed law runs counter to Canada’s historic support for refugees and humanitarian policies because it deems people guilty for seeking protection as a refugee. This presumed guilt is enshrined in many of the policies itself. One example is that of the government-created “safe list,” a list of countries that are deemed “safe” — if a person is seeking protection from a country that is on this list, they will have 15 days to apply for political asylum.

Hamilton Spectator – Research Finds Immigrant Entrepreneurs Lacking in Guidance, but not Enthusiasm

Wise5 is the name of the year-long research project headed by Sarah Wayland in concert with similar agencies in the regions of Niagara, Waterloo-Wellington-Dufferin, Windsor/Essex and Elgin Middlesex Oxford. About 65 entrepreneurs were interviewed for the study, 80 per cent of whom had lived in Canada for less than 10 years. The aim of the report was to create recommendations for communities to support immigrant businesses and identify best practices which each region can adopt as needed.

Winnipeg Free Press – English Test for Immigrants Worries Brandon

“Our immigration has very much been driven by Maple Leaf, and of course, most of the workers that they’re looking for are low-skilled workers,” said Leslie Allen, executive director of Westman Immigrant Services. “Many of them will not be coming in with very much English, if any at all.” […] “If Maple Leaf basically has to resort to only having foreign temporary workers coming in, then we will be having groups of people coming in for a period of two years and then leaving. It could really impact the numbers of people who are actually going to stay here in Brandon.”

Winnipeg Free Press – More Refugees Approved; Sponsors Needed

Canada will accept 1,000 refugees referred by its visa offices, if private sponsors step up, he said. The government is also offering financial support for their first six months […] Last year, Ottawa capped the number of new private refugee sponsorships to deal with a backlog of 23,200 cases. That cap of 1,350 refugees meant the United Church of Canada, for example, could only sponsor 18 refugees.

Montreal Gazette – Rich Asian Immigrants Spurn Quebec

Nine out of 10 wealthy immigrants accepted into Quebec’s investor immigrant program never come to Quebec, federal immigration minister Jason Kenney said Friday. “I do think it is peculiar that the province that was given power to select immigrants primarily to reinforce the French fact in Quebec is in fact flipping Asian people into Vancouver,” Kenney said during a meeting with The Gazette editorial board.
