Richmond Review – Young Immigrant Eager to Help Newcomers Settle

A Richmond High teen hopes a new youth mentorship program will help young immigrants adjust to Canada’s way of life. Bill Cao, 16, is the vice-president of the Greater Vancouver Society of Students for Accelerated Integration, and the society’s youth outreach team won second prize in the Zenith in Action community grants competition at Lansdowne Centre mall earlier this year. Armed with an $800 grant, Cao said the new program will connect newcomers with a same-age “buddy” who speaks the same language and can show them around town.

Reuters Canada – Spain Regions, Doctors Defy Immigrant Healthcare Ban

Some Spanish doctors and regions say they will defy a ban on free healthcare for an estimated 150,000 undocumented immigrants, imposed by the central government as part of spending cuts to avoid an international bailout. Five of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions – including Catalonia and Andalucia which provide more than a third of national economic output and are not governed by the central government’s ruling People’s Party – said they would continue to treat immigrants who have no papers.

Vancouver Sun – US State Governor Orders Agencies Not To Provide Public Benefits to Deferred-Status Immigrants

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is ordering state agencies not to provide public benefits to immigrants receiving deferred deportation status from the federal government — an order that reinforces current state law. Legislators, meanwhile, held a lengthy public hearing Thursday about whether Mississippi should enact a new law allowing law officers to check people’s immigration status during traffic stops or other encounters, similar to laws in Arizona and Alabama.

New York Times – Australia Increases Refugee Quota in Broad Immigration Reform

Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday ordered an immediate increase in the number of refugees that her country accepts yearly, part of an immigration reform package aimed at encouraging migrants to use official channels for asylum rather than long and dangerous boat journeys. The increase in the annual refugee intake — to 20,000 from 13,700, the biggest increase in 30 years — caps two weeks of bruising debate after the release of an expert report on immigration commissioned by the Australian government. The debate has led Ms. Gillard’s governing Labor Party to reverse its longstanding opposition to reopening remote offshore detention centers that were closed when the party came to power in 2007.

Los Angeles Times – Immigration Agents Sue Over New Deferred Deportation Program

A small group of immigration agents is suing the Obama administration, saying that the agents should not be required to implement a program to grant work permits and halt the deportation of some young illegal immigrants. The lawsuit alleges that the program, as well as directives issued last year that require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to use broader discretion in immigration cases, violates a 1996 federal law that requires federal agents to put into deportation proceedings those who entered the country unlawfully.
