Toronto Star – Immigration Policies Make Canada Less Welcoming, Study Says

While Ottawa’s drastic changes to the immigration system may help reduce backlogs and address short-term labour market needs, the Maytree Foundation report raises concerns about how these changes are reshaping Canada’s future as a country for immigrants. […] Titled “Shaping the Future,” the 96-page report says some of the changes are potentially positive, such as refocusing the federal skilled worker program, an initiative to bring in skilled tradespeople […]  But other changes are “problematic,” including a decision to wipe out immigration application backlogs legislatively; a moratorium on family sponsorships; reliance on temporary foreign workers to meet labour market needs; tightened citizenship requirements; a safe-country list of refugees whose claims would be fast-tracked.

Toronto Star – Ontario Survey Focuses on Immigrants’ Need for Canadian Experience in Job Market

Is Canadian experience relevant for employment? That’s the subject of a new online survey launched by the Ontario Human Rights Commission Friday to investigate how the Canadian experience requirement in the job market has affected newcomers to Ontario. […] A recent report by the Ontario government found that only 24 per cent of internationally trained immigrants in Ontario were working in their actual field of training in 2010. Lack of Canadian experience and recognition of foreign credentials are often cited as the key barriers.

Toronto Star – Roma Health Forum Takes Aim at Fallout from Misinformation and Ignorance

The purpose of the forum was to discuss the specific needs of the Roma refugee claimants who are here; we need to know who they are and what they require, just as we need to hear from the various social service agencies that serve them. […] In attendance: 200 people from 118 agencies. Here is one compelling reason for such a meeting: a couple of years ago, in one week, some 250 Roma kids registered in our schools, mainly in Parkdale; the school board was, as you might guess, unprepared. Another reason for the forum: the Toronto Board of Health is tracking the effects of racialization on the health of this city’s residents. Yet another reason? Canada’s current immigration policies are confusing, punitive and, depending on your point of view, racist.

Toronto Star – Ontario Wants Greater Power on Immigration Selection

The province will seriously pursue an immigration strategy similar to Quebec’s, which allows it to pick and choose its own immigrants, says Ontario’s immigration minister. […] The panel — comprising economists, people working in immigrant settlement, and corporate and industry leaders — said Ontario needs to attract at least 135,000 newcomers a year, raise the ratio of skilled workers and take charge of immigrant selection to keep its economic engine running beyond 2014.
