Toronto Star – Latinos Mobilize to Keep Arizona Sheriff from 6th Term in Office

Democrat Paul Penzone’s candidacy has been buoyed by support in the Latino community galvanized by opposition to Arpaio, who has become a symbol of Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration zeal. The sheriff’s so-called “crime suppression” sweeps in mostly Hispanic neighbourhoods have made him a hero to those nationwide seeking a crackdown on undocumented residents while angering the county’s growing Latino population and drawing a Justice Department civil rights lawsuit, which is continuing. […] Penzone said he wants to restore law-enforcement fundamentals to a sheriff’s office he believes has strayed from its mission — evidenced by Arpaio’s inquiry into Obama’s birth certificate earlier this year and the resources diverted to immigration busts as serious crimes weren’t investigated, he said.

Montreal Gazette – Despite Increase in Number of Immigration Judges, US Government Cannot Keep Up with Caseload

The government is not keeping up with the caseload in U.S. immigration courts, even with an increase in the number of judges handling the cases, a top Justice Department official reported Thursday. In a report, Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz said record-keeping by the immigration courts is so flawed that it is difficult to draw conclusions about why the courts are unable to reduce the volume of cases.

Hamilton Spectator – Immigration Levels to Stay the Same in 2013, Mix to Change: Kenney October 31, 2012

Canada will keep its intake of immigrants the same for the seventh straight year, admitting between 240,000 and 265,000 permanent residents in 2013, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Wednesday. Those numbers include a cut to the federal skilled worker program, with the government planning to admit fewer people under that policy. Instead, they’ll be increasing the number of people accepted under the Canada Experience Class program by about 10,000 people. That program facilitates permanent residency for people who studied in Canada and then found a job or are already in Canada as temporary foreign workers.

CTV News – Ombudsman to Review Sask. Immigration Nominee Changes that Upset People

Saskatchewan’s ombudsman plans to review how the province made changes to its immigrant nominee program. Kevin Fenwick has told the government he’ll review the transition to the new requirements and how it affected people that have approached his office. Saskatchewan announced in May that it was tightening its immigration rules after a request from Ottawa. Under new rules, someone can nominate only one family member at a time instead of nominating multiple relatives all at once and those nominees need to have a job offer.
