Winnipeg Free Press – Saskatchewan Premier Says Impact of Federal Refugee Health Cuts “Unbelievable”
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is criticizing a federal decision to deny chemotherapy to a refugee as “unbelievable” and un-Canadian. Wall says he doesn’t understand the rationale behind the move. […] Immigration Minister Jason Kenney outlined the rules Thursday in response to a question in the House of Commons. “A genuine refugee comes to Canada as a permanent resident and therefore qualifies for comprehensive provincial health insurance. Rejected asylum claimants and pending asylum claimants are not refugees until they are determined to be so by our fair and generous legal system, during which time they receive comprehensive health insurance but not extended benefits,” he said. “Those who are rejected and are pending removal are effectively illegal immigrants.”

Bridget Foster, named the 2012 recipient of the Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism, has selected the Association for New Canadians (ANC) to receive a $20,000 grant from the Government of Canada. The ANC is an organization dedicated to supporting all aspects of newcomer integration in Newfoundland and Labrador. For over 30 years, the organization has delivered services in settlement, language learning, skills development and employment.
Vancouver Sun – Mini-Visa Won’t Pry Into Personal Life: Kenney
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says a new online mini-visa European, Australian and New Zealand tourists will soon have to complete to come to Canada won’t contain the sort of invasive personal questions required by the U.S. equivalent.
The Globe and Mail – Kenney Reinstates Cancelled Visas for Moroccan Family
Federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has reinstated immigration visas for 50 Moroccan families that were initially cancelled after being issued by mistake. Mr. Kenney’s decision ended four days of confusion and anxiety for applicants such as Rachida Iblihi, who had landed at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport with two young children on Friday, only to be told that their papers weren’t valid. […] “A small number of visas were issued inadvertently,” Citizenship and Immigration Canada spokesman Paul Northcott said in an e-mail reply to The Globe and Mail.
Globe and Mail – Alberta Man Faces Deportation to Somalia, Where He Has Never Lived
Saeed Jama is awaiting his fate. He’ll be deported soon, perhaps Tuesday, because he’s a convicted drug dealer whose time in Canada has run out. […] He is being sent to Somalia, a country he wasn’t born in, has never lived in and says he has never been to, one the Canadian government calls “extremely volatile” and suggests no one travel to for any reason. He’s effectively stateless, a Saudi Arabia-born, Canada-raised child of Somali refugees – and an example of how the federal government’s tough-on-crime agenda, including a crackdown on illegal residents, can bump up against some thorny realities.
CBC – Deportation to Gaza Imminent Fear for Ottawa Man
Alabadleh is applying for permanent residency with his wife’s sponsorship after spending eight years in Canada, but said an enforcement officer with the Canada Border Services Agency told him he must surrender his travel documents and be deported to Gaza. […] CBSA classifies Gaza as a safe destination. A letter to Alabadleh that’s dated September 2005 said he “would not be subject to risk of persecution, danger of torture, risk to life or risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.”
