Toronto Star – Premier Dalton McGuinty’s “Jobs and Prosperity Council” Urges Boost for Businesses

The Jobs and Prosperity Council, which Premier Dalton McGuinty and Finance Minister Dwight Duncan launched in the March 27 provincial budget, says all levels of government must work more collaboratively with business to boost the economy. Most people shrugged when it was recently reported that the federal government is working on a new formula to distribute skilled immigrants among provinces. While we do not know the full impact it will have on Ontario, we do know that when the federal government generates a formula, Ontario tends to get the short end of the stick.

Montreal Gazette – Poland to Improve Conditions at Detention Centres for Illegal Immigrants Following Complaints

Living conditions and the treatment of illegal immigrants at Poland’s detention centres will be improved, the interior minister said Monday. Jacek Cichocki spoke after ordering inspections of the country’s five centres last month following complaints from some refugees of prison-like conditions, humiliating treatment by armed guards, inadequate medical care and a lack of schooling for children.

Winnipeg Free Press – Kenney Gets Best Wishes for Refugees

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney may find himself on a few more Christmas-card lists this year, but some will have frosty wishes. The Winnipeg creators of the 59-cents letter-writing campaign are asking people who object to cuts in refugee health care to send Kenney a holiday card wishing him the best of the season and wishing he will change his decision to cut the program.

CBC – New Refugee Fast-Track Could Hurt Legitimate Claimants

A new system for granting refugee status came into force this weekend, allowing claimants from the European Union, Croatia and the United States to have their applications fast-tracked. The goal of the new rules, according to the federal government, is to weed out bogus cases more quickly, but some worry it doesn’t offer legitimate claimants enough time to prepare their cases.
