CICS News – Bridging Visa Introduced for Temporary Residents Applying for Permanent Residence in Canada

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) on Thursday introduced the ‘Bridging Open Work Permit’ for temporary residents who are working in Canada and are awaiting a final decision on their application for permanent residence through an economic class immigration program. The new work permit will save foreign workers from having to discontinue their work in Canada and leave the country while they wait for permanent residence.

Canadian Jewish News – Holocaust Centre Criticizes “Safe” Country List

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre (MHMC) is urging the Canadian government to remove Hungary and possibly other eastern European countries from the list of designated “safe” countries of origin created by the new Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act, formerly known as the omnibus refugee Bill C-31. […] “The fact that a government is elected democratically does not necessarily mean that it will assure the safety and equal treatment of a country’s minority,” said MHMC board member Daniel Rabinowicz. “The Canadian refugee status determination system already evaluates each case on its own merits.”

Citizenship and Immigration Canada News Release – Cutting Red Tape for Skilled Immigrnats

The new Bridging Open Work Permit enables certain economic class applicants to maintain their status and continue working in Canada while they wait for a final decision on their permanent residence application, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney announced. “We are making our immigration system faster and more flexible, and cutting red tape for the skilled immigrants Canada’s economy needs to grow and thrive,” said Minister Jason Kenney.  “The new open work permit provides those who are transitioning to permanent residency with better opportunities to integrate into Canada’s labour market to the benefit of our economy and all Canadians.”

Toronto Star – Prime Minister Stephen Harper Talks Immigration, Opens Up About Religion in TV Interview

Canada will no longer “passively” accept immigrants as it shakes up its immigration system to ensure it gets the newcomers it needs to fill growing labour shortages, Prime Minister Stephen Harper says. “We have been making some fairly profound changes to how we handle immigration,” Harper said in a year-end interview with Global News. “We have traditionally just been a country that passively accepts applications. We are now trying to go out and shape those immigration applications and process those in a way that will serve the labour force holes that are emerging.”

The Come to Canada Wizard, which helps people determine if they are eligible to live, work or study in Canada, has now been visited by well over 2 million users since its launch in August 2011. […] The Come to Canada Wizard is interactive. It presents users with a series of questions to determine which federal immigration option best suits their specific circumstances. It then leads users through the application steps and provides instructions and forms.
