Globe and Mail – Splits Emerge as Obama Pushed Congress to Support New Immigration Laws

President Barack Obama pushed Congress on Tuesday to overhaul the U.S. immigration system but disagreement with Republicans over securing the border with Mexico has already begun to sour bipartisan efforts. “We need Congress to act on a comprehensive approach that finally deals with the 11 million undocumented immigrants,” Mr. Obama said at a high school in Las Vegas. After years on the back burner, immigration reform has suddenly looked possible as Republicans, chastened by Latino voters who rejected them in the November election, look more kindly on an immigration overhaul.

Winnipeg Free Press – Closure of Canada’s Visa Office in Buffalo, N.Y., Leaves Applicants in Limbo

Thousands of people waiting to become permanent residents of Canada are angry about a backlog caused by the closure of a Canadian visa office in New York state. Their applications were shipped from Buffalo to Ottawa last year after the government closed the office in the U.S. city. Applicants say the move has placed their efforts to apply for permanent residency in limbo, with processing times far exceeding what they had been led to believe initially. About 10,000 applications seem to be stuck, said a spokeswoman for the group, which calls itself “the forgotten of Buffalo.” Some people have given up and left the country, while others are scrounging to get by in Canada, where they are so far unable to work or obtain health care as their temporary visas have expired, Michele Doiron told a news conference Tuesday on Parliament Hill.

Global News – Proposed Law Would Strip Canadian Citizenship for Acts of War

A Conservative MP wants to reward permanent residents serving in the Canadian Armed Forces with faster citizenship and revoke the citizenship of people who engage in acts of war against Canada. […] Bill C-425 would allow permanent residents who have signed a minimum three-year contract with the Canadian Forces to gain citizenship one year earlier than normal. While citizenship is generally a requirement to join the Canadian Forces, permanent residents can receive a citizenship waiver if they have specific skill sets needed. The second, and more contentious part of the bill, would see people stripped of Canadian citizenship if they fight against the Canadian Armed Forces. The provision would apply to dual citizens, citizens who are also a legal resident of another country or permanent residents of Canada who have applied for citizenship.
