Journal Pioneer – PEI Must Turn Toward Immigration for Skilled Workers: MacLauchlan

As the Island workforce continues to diminish, if the province wishes to maintain its current level of services, it has no choice but to immediately turn towards immigration to compensate for skilled worker shortages, suggests former UPEI president Wade MacLauchlan. During an information session about the LIENS immigrant integration program recently in Charlottetown, MacLauchlan and other speakers offered striking statistics and statements to the more than 40 participants at the event. They claimed the province is expecting the loss of 40 per cent of its workforce within the next 40 years, mostly because of declining birthrates, the increasing mortality rate of the aging population and the out-migration of Islanders.

Hamilton Spectator – [U.S.] Farmers Eager for Immigration Reform

Last week, a group of Republican and Democratic senators unveiled a blueprint that aims to grant legal status to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. President Barack Obama also joined the fray, urging Congress to move legislation along quickly this year. Immigration reform has been a rallying cry among farm groups for years. Farmers have long reported chronic labour shortages that predate the recession. During the housing boom, for instance, contractors persuaded farm workers to work in construction. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, roughly half of all hired crop farm workers are in the country illegally. Of all workers, 7 of 10 are from Mexico, a country that has provided a steady supply of farm labourers since the middle of the last century.

Winnipeg Free Press – Suspect in Bulgarian Bombing Lived in Canada as a Child, Left at Age 12: Kenney

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney sparked fresh debate about Canada’s responsibilities to its dual citizens Wednesday as he shed a little more light on the shadowy suspect in a terrorist attack in Bulgaria last summer. Kenney said the Lebanese Canadian man arrived in Canada from Lebanon at age eight and lived in Vancouver with his mother before becoming a citizen, then returned to Lebanon when he was 12. Bulgarian authorities say that’s where they believe the man is now, along with the other suspect in the July attack, which killed five Israeli tourists, a Bulgarian bus driver and a third suspect — the bomber himself. […] While the Lebanese-Canadian individual may not have lived in Canada recently, Kenney said the controversy raises the question of what to do about citizens who go abroad to commit acts of terror. “Canadian citizenship is predicated on loyalty to this country, and I cannot think of a more obvious act of renouncing one’s sense of loyalty than going and committing acts of terror,” he said. He suggested the government ought to look at what other countries do and consider a mechanism for stripping Canadian citizenship from those involved in terrorist acts abroad.
