Timmins Press – Teaming Up to Attract Workers to Timmins

A new joint venture between the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) and the Timmins Local Immigration Partnership (TLIP) hopes to see an increase in the employment of recent immigrants in the area while satisfying the current labour shortage. The two groups have formed an employers’ council that TEDC president Fred Gibbons said will work to reduce current barriers for recent immigrants while addressing current and future workforce trends. […] “The skills shortage is a very serious matter,” said Gibbons. “Now, I am referring to mining, but this is true of virtually every industry, manufacturing, retail and the service industry, it is endemic throughout our community and the reality is that we just don’t have enough people with the correct skills and qualifications to fill up these job opportunities.”

Globe and Mail – On Immigration, Canadians are Welcoming but Realistic

Encouraging immigration is a self-serving policy, not a philanthropic endeavour. Developed countries need immigrants, especially when they’re plagued with declining birth rates and a rapidly aging population. […] It’s troubling that a recent survey conducted by Forum Research for the National Post shows that as many as 70 per cent of Canadians are in favour of restricting the number of qualified immigrants accepted into the country.
