CBC – Toews Defends Border Raid Show as CBSA Documentary
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews during Question Period on Monday defended his decision to give approval for a reality TV crew to film immigration raids. Toews faced criticism from three different MPs, who echoed sentiments and questions put forward over the last week by lawyers, advocates, and some Canadians who were outraged that a film crew was present during the arrests of eight men on a Vancouver construction site last week. […] In response to each of the questions, Toews told the MPs the same thing: The show he approved merely documents what Canada’s border officers face on a daily basis. […] Quebec NDP MP Rosane Doré Lefebvre, speaking in French, then said the minister has no consideration for individuals who put their lives in danger and decide to flee their country, and that he should think before making a spectacle of their situations.
The Guardian – Australia is the Land of Plenty for the Biggest Wave of Irish Emigrants in a Generation
Nearly 15,000 working visas were granted to Irish people in 2009-10; two years later, that figure had jumped to almost 26,000. The new wave of working holidaymakers to Australia are part of Ireland’s biggest emigration since the economic downturn of the late 1980s. In the year to April 2012, 87,000 people left the country, according to Ireland’s central statistics office – nearly 2% of the population. Of those departing permanently, more than half (46,000) were Irish citizens – a 250% increase on 2009. Many went to the UK or the US, but Australia is now the third most popular destination.
The Chronicle Herald – Immigrants Face Service Gap
Just weeks before Marilyn More was shuffled out of her immigration portfolio on Friday, she announced a key change to immigration policy to meet the needs of a business community clamouring for skilled labour. But the change will coincide with a glaring gap in services for immigrants and newcomers, created by the pending closure of the province’s 12 regional development authorities on March 31. They […] delivered highly personalized support services to immigrants and newcomers from other parts of Canada. At some point, the authorities will be replaced by six regional enterprise networks. But they are closing down before the networks are established.
CBC – Toews Approved TV Show Filming B.C. Immigration Raids
Approval for a reality show production crew to film an immigration raid at a Vancouver construction site came directly from the federal government, documents obtained by a Vancouver woman show. […] The document was prepared for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and it bears his signature and approval. It also says someone from the Prime Minister’s Office viewed a demo reel provided by Force Four Entertainment, as well as member’s of Toews’s staff and CBSA senior managers and legal services. […] The document also discusses how the Border Security show would be a valuable opportunity to promote messages about Canada’s commitment to border security.
