Ottawa Citizen – Former Immigration Manager Diane Serré Sentenced to Four Years in Prison
A former immigration manager was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison after a judge found she had undermined Canadian values, potentially put the country at risk and tarnished the nation’s international reputation by accepting cash and gifts in exchange for providing special treatment to certain immigrants. […] Serré, 42, was a former immigration manager at Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Catherine Street offices. She was found guilty of 15 counts of fraud and 12 counts of breach of trust.
Radio-Canada – Langues officielles : 1,1 milliard pour l’éducation, l’immigration et les communautés
Dans son prochain plan visant à protéger et promouvoir les deux langues officielles du pays, le gouvernement canadien entend consacrer 1,1 milliard de dollars sur cinq ans à trois priorités, soit l’éducation, l’immigration et l’appui aux communautés. Le volet immigration de la Feuille de route bénéficiera de 149,5 millions de dollars, dont 120 millions iront à Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada, pour la formation linguistique des immigrants économiques. Ottawa donne aussi 29,5 millions pour encourager l’immigration vers les communautés de langue officielle en situation minoritaire. Il cite l’exemple de son programme pour favoriser l’immigration francophone au Nouveau-Brunswick, qui dispose d’une enveloppe de 4 millions de dollars.

Government officials are bracing for the possibility Canada is asked to take in people fleeing the ongoing conflict in Syria, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Wednesday. But a large-scale resettlement program won’t resolve the growing refugee crisis, Kenney admitted. […] Kenney has come under repeated criticism from Syrian-Canadian groups and refugee advocates for failing to provide a concrete strategy for the growing refugee problem caused by the two-year-old civil war. The United Nations estimates more than a million people have left the country since 2011 — a number they say could eventually triple if no solution is found. Kenney said officials from his department were recently in Lebanon and Jordan assessing the situation of Syrians who’d fled there.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada News Release – Canada to Welcome 1,000 Additional Bhutanese Refugees
Canada will welcome up to 1,000 additional Bhutanese refugees from Nepal, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today. “Canada has a longstanding tradition of assisting refugees and welcomes one in 10 refugees resettled globally, more than almost any other country in the world,” said Minister Kenney. […] In May 2007, the Government of Canada announced that it would resettle up to 5,000 Bhutanese refugees over five years. In June 2012, the Government committed to resettling 500 more Bhutanese refugees who have family connections in Canada. Today’s announcement of an additional 1,000 Bhutanese refugees will bring the total number to 6,500. To date, 5,000 have already resettled in Canada.
