La Presse – La réforme de l’immigration passe un cap important au Sénat
La grande réforme de l’immigration aux États-Unis soutenue par le président Barack Obama a franchi une étape majeure mardi avec l’adoption de la proposition de loi par une commission du Sénat. Après près de deux semaines de débats lors desquels les 18 sénateurs de la commission de la Justice ont voté sur une centaine d’amendements, trois républicains se sont joints aux 10 démocrates pour adopter le texte final, version améliorée d’un projet de réforme négocié pendant des mois à huis clos par un groupe de huit sénateurs issus des deux partis.

[…] Dans le cadre de sa visite dans la Silicon Valley, le ministre Kenney a rencontré des entrepreneurs étrangers ainsi que des personnalités influentes de la collectivité des entreprises en démarrage et de la collectivité des technologies, dont des fondateurs d’entreprises, des accélérateurs d’entreprise, d’autres chefs d’entreprise, des investisseurs de capital-risque, des investisseurs providentiels ainsi que des experts de l’immigration, dans le but de faire la promotion du nouveau visa pour démarrage d’entreprise et d’expliquer en quoi le Canada est un lieu de prédilection pour lancer une entreprise et faire des investissements.
Radio-Canada – La Saskatchewan entreprendra des consultations publiques sur l’immigration
La Saskatchewan mènera des consultations publiques sur l’orientation future de son Programme de candidats à l’immigration, selon un communiqué provincial publié mardi. La province précise qu’elle pourrait accueillir 450 immigrants de plus cette année, à condition d’apporter des changements à son programme, à la demande d’Ottawa. D’après des changements envisagés, la catégorie « famille » du programme pourrait être fusionnée avec la catégorie des travailleurs qualifiés. La fusion pourrait aussi voir la mise en place d’un système de pointage. La province souhaite consulter différents acteurs sur ces possibles changements.

Saskatchewan’s Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) will receive an additional 450 nominations this year, bringing the annual number to 4,450 for 2013, the government announced Tuesday. As a result of the increase, up to more than 1,200 newcomers to Saskatchewan are expected in addition to the approximately-12,000 new residents already arriving annually. […] The increase of 450 nominees represents 27 per cent of the total additional nomination allocation across Canada in 2013, according to the Saskatchewan Party.
New York Times – U.S. Quietly Monitors Foreigners’ Departures at the Canadian Border
Hundreds of thousands of foreigners passing into Canada from the United States have unwittingly been a part of a grand experiment by the Department of Homeland Security to crack down on visitors who violate laws governing the length of their stay. […] The pilot project with Canada, conducted from September to January, involved about a third of the traffic across the northern American border, tracking the departure of 413,222 foreigners from the United States. Starting this year, according to Congressional officials who have been briefed on the plan, the information collected at the Canadian border will be used to prevent certain foreigners who have stayed too long in the United States from returning again by revoking tourist visas or taking other steps. […] By the end of next month, the project is scheduled to be expanded to almost all land border traffic between Canada and the United States.
