The Province – Obama Says “Moment is Now” for US Immigration Legislation as Senate Begins Work on Bill
In Spanish and English, the Senate pushed contentious immigration legislation over an early procedural hurdle with deceptive ease on Tuesday as President Barack Obama insisted the “moment is now” to give 11 million immigrants in the United States illegally a chance at citizenship. Despite the lopsided, 82-15 vote, Republicans served notice they will seek to toughen the bill’s border security provisions and impose tougher terms on those seeking to gain legal status.
Toronto Star: Employers of Foreign Workers Face Workplace Inspections
Canadian employers who hire foreign workers will face surprise on-site inspections by authorities to ensure that the need for them is genuine and that Canadian workers are not passed over for the job. Under proposed regulatory changes unveiled Friday, federal officials would monitor employer compliance not only at the time of the applications to bring in migrant workers but throughout the employment period. […] Employers found to be non-compliant with any of the conditions would be placed on a public ineligibility list, barring them from accessing the temporary foreign worker program for two years. Job offers from any such non-compliant employers would not be valid for immigration applications.

Des aides domestiques et certains organismes sociaux qui les soutiennent songent sérieusement à intenter des poursuites contre le gouvernement fédéral canadien contre le gouvernement du Québec dans le dossier de ces femmes venues au Canada pour travailler dans des résidences de personnes aisées. Ces femmes – ce sont des femmes en quasi-totalité dont on parle ici et des Philippines en très grande majorité – arrivent au Canada avec en poche un contrat d’embauche à titre d’aide familiale via un programme fédéral dit « programme des aides domestiques ». Selon Marc-Antoine Cloutier, fondateur de la clinique Juripop, « Le programme en question pousse les aides domestiques à rester au service d’employeurs qui ne respectent pas leurs droits. De plus, ce programme crée un statut particulier qui les exclut d’un certain nombre de garanties qu’offre normalement le Québec en matière de protection sociale et de droit du travail. »
La Presse – Obama défend la réforme de l’immigration
Barack Obama a soutenu mardi un vaste projet de réforme du système d’immigration et mis en garde les élus qui seraient tentés de le bloquer, au moment où le Sénat entamait ses débats en séance plénière sur cette grande promesse électorale du président américain. Précédé dans la salle d’apparat de la Maison-Blanche par une jeune Nigériane sans papiers qui verrait s’ouvrir à elle un accès à la nationalité américaine si cette réforme était votée, M. Obama a défendu la nécessité de « réparer un système dysfonctionnel », incapable selon lui de régler le problème des quelque 11,5 millions de clandestins vivant dans le pays. […] « Il n’y a aucune raison que le Congrès ne parvienne pas à boucler ce dossier avant la fin de l’été », a lancé pour sa part M. Obama.
The Globe and Mail – Marois Backs Quebec Soccer Officials in Standoff Over Turban Ban
Premier Pauline Marois has thrown her support behind Quebec soccer officials’ ban on Sikh turbans. Earlier this month, the Canadian Soccer Association had suspended the Quebec Soccer Federation over its decision to uphold a ban on turbans and other Sikh religious headgear. The Premier called it “unacceptable” for Canadian soccer officials to suspend the Quebec federation, and said the provincial body has the right to set its own rules.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada News Release – Come to Canada Wizard Attracts More than Four Million Visits
More than seven thousand people a day, from all around the globe, are using the Come to Canada Wizard to conjure up answers to their immigration questions. The Wizard has now seen more than four million visits since it was launched in August 2011. “We want the world’s best and brightest to come to Canada and to help grow our economy,” said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. “The Wizard has made it easy for people to assess their personal eligibility to come to Canada and has simplified the first steps of applying, which saves them time and money.”
