National Post – Refugee Claimant Almost Deported After “Appalling” Translation Errors at Hearing
A man claiming asylum from a brutal crime gang was almost deported back to El Salvador because of faulty Spanish translation at his refugee hearing that turned his fear of retribution into an innocuous concern. A Federal Court of Canada judge has now stepped in, ordering a new hearing after numerous crucial translation errors were made, including mistranslating the word for “hit list” as meaning “pending” and the words for “the police” as “people.” Moises Edgardo Segovia Batres will have a second Immigration and Refugee Board hearing to decide the merits of his claim — with a different translator.
Radio Canada International – La Saskatchewan compte plus de 1,1 million d’habitants
La population de la province de la Saskatchewan, dans les Prairies canadiennes, dépasse pour la première fois 1,1 million d’habitants, selon une étude de Statistique Canada publiée jeudi. L’étude Estimations démographiques annuelles : Canada, provinces et territoires montre que la province a gagné 20 757 résidents depuis 2012 et 106 255 depuis 2007. Le premier ministre Brad Wall se réjouit que la Saskatchewan ait réussi à attirer plus de 100 000 habitants en six ans. « Cela montre la force économique de cette nouvelle Saskatchewan », affirme-t-il dans un communiqué. « Cela montre aussi aux pessimistes qui croyaient que ce type de croissance était impossible qu’ils se sont bien trompés. »

Dans l’ouest du Canada le marché du travail est en manque de travailleurs et plus particulièrement de travailleurs qualifiés. La Saskatchewan, au centre du pays, affichait le mois dernier le taux de chômage le plus bas au Canada à 4,2 %. Une situation qui donne du fil à retordre aux entreprises à la recherche de travailleurs spécialisés. Un problème que Denis Prud’homme connaît bien car avant de fonder sa société de recrutement Prudhomme International Inc, il détenait une compagnie spécialisée dans le transport de marchandises. D’ailleurs Prudhomme International Inc se spécialise dans le marché des travailleurs étrangers et francophones de métiers, comme des soudeurs et des mécaniciens. Une entreprise qu’il a démarrée en 2004 pour répondre à ses propres besoin en main d’œuvre.

Since shortly after he took office, President Obama has exerted some significant energy fending off demands from immigrant rights groups to roll back his administration’s deportation policy. Immigrants have been removed from the country under his watch at a rate higher than ever before, and advocates say the toll on families and communities is intolerable. With the exception of his high profile Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which halted the removal of hundreds of thousands of DREAM Act-eligible youth, Obama has told advocates to buzz off, and then continued a bellicose deportation policy—400,000 people each year.

The past few years have seen skewed economic experiences in many parts of the globe. […] China, which has been a manufacturing powerhouse, has been getting relatively expensive. As companies have looked around for a place to be, they have increasingly cast their eyes on Mexico, and opened their factories there instead. Mexico now has a bit of cachet, and a lot of economic potential. As always happens under the circumstances, it is now a destination for international immigration. True, plenty of Mexicans still want in to the U.S., but it is no longer one-way traffic. According to data from the two countries (quoted in this recent article in the New York Times), over the past few years more Americans have been added to the population of Mexico than the other way around.

[…] Foreign service officers — who work for the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency — have been without a contract since June 2011.
