Deutsche Welle – Germany’s Doors Are “Open to the World’s Talent”
In its sixth annual report, the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR) says Germany has developed “progressive immigration tools for third-country citizens.” Germany has not only caught up with advanced immigration countries like Canada, Sweden or the US – Germany has meanwhile “joined their ranks.” The SVR report compares Germany’s migration and integration policies with those of select EU and traditional immigration countries. The analysis shows that “Germany has become one of the pioneers of modern migration policy in its labor migration policy.” Today, the SVR report states, Germany can “easily keep up with” Canadian immigration regulations, which are generally regarded as exemplary. […] Getting the word out that Germany is in fact a country of immigration is of utmost importance, says SVR chairwoman Christine Langenfeld. At the same time, it’s just as important to make it clear to Germans that migration is the country’s foremost task for the future, she told reporters in Berlin on Tuesday at the report’s presentation.
Toronto Star – Migrants from Africa, Culpability in the West
Last weekend’s catastrophic shipwreck near Sicily, which may prove to be the worst such disaster in decades, resulted in a death toll that may exceed 800 people, including as many as 100 children. Survivors said many of the children were actually by themselves, placed on the boat by parents in a frantic effort to give their children a future. […] Europe has become an impenetrable fortress. It is now extremely difficult for refugees to reach a European country legally and safely. In the minds of many voters, and their politicians, immigration is a dirty word. […] In this debate, there is also no reference to why so many people are in search of a life that would provide some sort of economic security. This week, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists revealed in a groundbreaking and damning series on the World Bank that its projects displaced an extraordinary 3.4 million people in the last five years. Shouldn’t Western governments, which back the World Bank, assume some of the blame?
Guardian – Forget the “War on Smuggling,” We Need to be Helping Refugees in Need
The crisis in the Mediterranean, which has led to more than 1,700 deaths already this year, has evoked an immediate response from European political leaders. Yet the EU response fundamentally and wilfully misunderstands the underlying causes. It has focused increasingly on tackling smuggling networks, reinforcing border control and deportation. Somehow European politicians have managed to turn a human tragedy into an opportunity to further reinforce migration control policies, rather than engage in meaningful international cooperation to address the real causes of the problem. The deaths in the Mediterranean have two main causes. First, the abolition in November 2014 of the successful Mare Nostrum search-and-rescue programme, which saved more than 100,000 lives last year, immediately led to a reduction in the number of rescues and an increase in the number of deaths. Second, and most importantly, there is a global displacement crisis. […] From early last week, Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi, focused on proclaiming a “war on trafficking”.[…] The proposals to emerge from last week’s emergency EU meetings in Luxembourg and Brussels have been similarly disappointing. They have focused on destroying the vessels of smugglers and committing to higher levels of rapid deportation.
Wall Street Journal – Hungary’s Orban Wants Army to Block Immigration into Europe
The European Union should protect its borders against immigration using military force because it doesn’t need new migrants, Hungary’s prime minister said the day after EU leaders agreed to increase funding to keep migrants from dying while trying to cross the Mediterranean. The leaders of the 28-nation EU agreed in Brussels on Thursday to triple funding for patrols in the Mediterranean after hundreds of people drowned in one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks on the Mediterranean in recent days. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban urged even more action.[…] An EU summit planned for July to discuss migration matters should tackle basic issues such as whether Europe needs immigrants at all, he said. [… ] Hungary’s governing Fidesz party said in February it wants to “close the country’s borders” to economic immigrants from outside the EU because of a spike in their number.
