La Presse – Justin Trudeau courtise les immigrants
Après la pause imposée par le premier débat en français, Justin Trudeau a relancé sa campagne électorale en courtisant les immigrants. Le chef du Parti libéral a promis ce matin de réviser le système d’immigration afin de faciliter la réunification des familles souhaitant s’établir au Canada. Justin Trudeau était de passage ce matin à Brampton, en Ontario, pour dévoiler ses engagements en matière d’immigration, insistant sur l’importance des nouveaux arrivants pour l’économie canadienne. «Durant la décennie de pouvoir de M. Harper, notre système d’immigration a mal été géré, politisé et réorienté pour écarter les personnes qui choisissaient de faire du Canada leur nouveau lieu de résidence permanent», a dénoncé le chef libéral.
Star Phoenix – Border Services Tries to Boost Refugee Flow
The Canada Border Services Agency is recruiting employees for temporary duty assignments in the Middle East to help speed up the flow of Syrian refugees to Canada. The buildup of personnel and resources to manage the Syrian refugee crisis became a priority in the public service after the Conservative government recently announced it would speed up the processing of refugee applications to bring in thousands more by the end of the year. The border agency issued a call this week to all directors general in Ottawa and the regions to identify potential employees who could be tapped for “rapid deployment” to the Middle East to help resettle Syrian refugees. The agency prefers employees who have Middle East or refugee experience and who speak Arabic. The department said the inventory of CBSA officers it is putting together could be temporarily assigned to Citizenship and Immigration Canada to do the same work as CIC’s visa officers.
Radio-Canada – Un milliard d’euros pour les réfugiés syriens au Proche-Orient
Les dirigeants de l’Union européenne (UE), réunis mercredi soir en sommet extraordinaire à Bruxelles, se sont engagés à fournir un milliard d’euros aux agences des Nations unies pour qu’elles viennent en aide aux réfugiés syriens qui restent au Proche-Orient. Le président de la France, François Hollande, affectera par ailleurs 100 millions d’euros supplémentaires sur deux ans au Programme alimentaire mondial de l’ONU et à l’aide aux réfugiés, a annoncé président François Hollande. Jean-Claude Juncker, le président de la Commission européenne, a déclaré aux journalistes que le sommet, destiné à aplanir leurs différends sur la crise des migrants, s’était déroulé dans une atmosphère « excellente », moins tendue que certains ne l’avaient craint.
Radio-Canada – Réfugiés syriens : il faut s’attaquer aux racines de l’exode, dit la Croix Rouge
Le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CIRC) s’adresse directement aux gouvernements pour qu’ils s’attaquent aux racines de l’exode pour réduire l’afflux de réfugiés syriens en Europe. Les estimations de l’ONU font état 250 000 morts dans le conflit en Syrie, qui a également contraint quelque 11 millions de personnes à fuir leurs foyers : 7 millions de déplacés à l’intérieur de la Syrie et 4 millions de réfugiés à l’étranger, principalement dans les pays voisins (Turquie, Liban et Jordanie notamment). Mais les conditions de vie dans les principaux pays d’accueil se sont dégradées et incitent les candidats à l’exil à prendre le risque, indique le CICR.
CBC – Ottawa’s Growing International Student Population Seeks Support
The Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre says it’s being approached for settlement and language services by an increasing number of international students from China, but it doesn’t have the funding to help them. International student enrolment is growing significantly on campuses in Ottawa, and China is the biggest source country. Chinese students in Ottawa are looking off-campus for help from those who speak Mandarin or Cantonese when they have landlord issues, get traffic tickets or need to see a doctor, said Sharon Kan, executive director of the Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre. “We, on the one hand, are like a mentor and, on the other hand, like a second parent to these teenagers,” said Kan, who said the centre also ends up in conversations with students about relationship issues, the pressures of school and depression.
Toronto Star – Muslim, Newcomer Groups Join Coalition Supporting Sex-Ed
Organizations representing Muslim parents and recent immigrants have joined a new, diverse coalition of 144 groups that plans to fight the ongoing anti-sex-education boycotts and billboards with their own public service announcements and open appeal to Ontarians. “We have examined the new sex-ed curriculum and as people who live and breathe the health and well-being of Ontario’s diverse communities, we say that the curriculum stands on solid, honest ground,” says the Ontario Coalition Supporting Health Education, in an open letter. […] Maya Roy, executive director of Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto, said her agency got onside after some of its South Asian members worked on a project where “aunties and grandmothers were trained to go out and run sharing circles in homes and mosques and temples” about domestic violence, and “they were shocked to find out that you can have sexual assault and rape within a marriage” and wanted to inform their own children and grandchildren about that as well as issues like inappropriate touching, which is covered in the new curriculum.
